Published: September 17, 2009
The Pee Dee Doll Club will be celebrating Barbie’s 50th birthday during its 23rd annual Doll & Toy Show & Sale on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Christian Assembly Church in Florence.
The theme of the show is “Celebrate Barbie’s Birthday with Us” and will feature a display of past Barbie conventions, including Barbie dolls and souvenirs, as well as a display of vintage Barbies. You can test your knowledge of the hallmark doll by taking the “Barbie through the Years” trivia contest. Winners will be awarded prizes.
The Pee Dee Doll Club welcomes more than 20 dealers from throughout the Southeast for this event. Show attendants will be able to browse through 40 tables of collectible and fashion dolls such as Tyler, Gene, Tonner, Ginny’s and Madame Alexander dolls, plus many new and vintage Barbies and accessories. Antique, composition and vinyl dolls from the 1930s to today’s productions will be on display, as well as doll furniture, doll china sets, miniatures, paper dolls, collectible toys and teddy bears.
On hand for appraising and identifying collectible dolls will be expert Bradley Justice, Region 8 director of the United Federation of Doll Clubs, from Durham, N.C. Appraisal fee is $3 per doll.
Bonnie Capps from “Dollie Darling” will be available to do minor repairs and give advice on cleaning and restoring your treasured dolls.
Door prizes will be given away every half hour. Try for a chance to win dolls donated by Mattel, Tonner, the Alexander Doll Co. and other dealers.
Organized in 1984, the Pee Dee Doll Club is a nonprofit organization made up of junior and senior doll lovers. The club meets monthly at the library to study and share doll knowledge.
A portion of the funds raised by this year’s show will go to support the Christian Assembly School of Florence, located at 401 Pamplico Highway.
