Lucas selected to play on Shrine Bowl team
Three generations of the Lucas family have served the Hartsville High varsity football team in the position of tight end. This year, Will Lucas will also play that role at the 73rd Annual Shrine Bowl on Dec. 19 in Gibbs Stadium at Wofford College in Spartanburg.
Comptroller general says transparency can improve economy

Pennington elected Hartsville mayor; Lamar mayoral race set for runoff
Businessman Mel Pennington won an overwhelming victory in Tuesday’s race for mayor of Hartsville with 65.5 percent of the vote to rival Pam Sansbury’s 34.5 percent. In Lamar, mayoral candidates Randy Reynolds and Jackie L. Thomas will face each other in a runoff Nov. 17.
Harriot challenges Hartsville election results
Jannie Harriot, who lost her bid for the District 1 seat on Hartsville City Council, is challenging the election results. The Municipal Election Commission of Hartsville will meet at 2:30 p.m. Friday to consider Harriot’s challenge.

Lamar wins playoff tune up 52-0 versus rival Timmonsville
It’s a rivalry game that through the years has produced some of the most competitive and intense games one will ever see on the football field, but it was all Lamar (9-1) against Timmonsville Friday, as Silver Foxes quarterback Trevor Norris threw five touchdown passes in the first half before his team coasted to a 52-0 victory. Lamar had won a contest earlier in the season 26-6.
Hartsville defense makes stand to beat Bruins
This Friday night at Kelleytown Stadium at 7:30 p.m. the Hartsville Red Foxes (9-1) face the Sumter Gamecocks (8-2) to determine the region champion. It’s that simple.

Taste of the Farm allows residents to sample local products
Palmettovores were on the prowl Thursday night at the Taste of the Farm, sponsored by the Greater Darlington County Chamber of Commerce. In the first of what will become an annual event, vendors paid tribute to South Carolina agriculture.
EDITORIAL: Stimulus spending has more than two sides
On Friday, the White House released estimates that $160 billion in stimulus spending created or preserved 650,000 direct jobs. The stimulus program awarded $3.8 billion to South Carolina, and $702 million have been received, according to recovery.gov. These funds have created or saved 8,147 jobs as of Oct. 30, and these jobs are quite welcome given the state of our state.

Lynwood Lewis is being remembered as a civic leader, as a family man who loved Hartsville and for his leadership of the Butler Heritage Foundation.
Animal shelter shows off improvements
The Darlington County Humane Society showed off some recent improvements at the animal shelter Thursday with an open house at the facility. Among the improvements is a new adoption courtyard that will allow prospective pet owners and pets the opportunity to get to know each other before an adoption.

For the 36th consecutive year, the Center Theater in Hartsville will be the site for the Little Miss and Teen Miss Hartsville and Darlington County beauty pageants. This event is a double pageant with winners crowned in each category, one representing Hartsville and one Darlington County. Winners will represent each area for 2009-10 and go on to compete in the state pageant in June.

More than $13,000 raised for mayoral campaigns
According the South Carolina Ethics Commission Web site, the two candidates for mayor of Hartsville have raised more than $13,000 as of Oct. 20. Mel Pennington has raised $7,906.25 this election cycle, and Pam Sansbury has raised $5,573.44.

Mayoral candidates make final pitches
Pam Sansbury said her years of experience in city government as a member of Hartsville City Council and as city finance director make her the only qualified candidate for the job of mayor.
Mel Pennington said his years on the city’s planning commission, where he currently serves as vice chairman, give him ample experience and insight into the workings of city government.
American Red Cross Blood Drives: Nov. 3-8
This week, there will be eight blood drives for the American Red Cross in the Pee Dee area.
Historical marker for former jail to be dedicated Nov. 13
DARLINGTON - A dedication ceremony for a state historical marker for the old Darlington County jail, now the home of the Darlington County Historical Commission offices, will take place at 1 p.m. Nov. 13 at the commission building at 204 Hewitt St., Darlington.
Tobacco barns subject of exhibit
Tobacco farming was once a way of life for many in the Pee Dee region. Today, farmlands in this area are no longer dominated by tobacco, though traces of the crops past dominance are evident. Tobacco barns dot our landscape, and a heritage trail in the honor of the crop runs from I-95 in Darlington County to US501 along the Grand Stand.

GOP statewide candidates to appear at event Thursday
