The Darlington County Historical commission unveiled the county’s newest state historical marker Friday, this one at the commission’s office in the old Darlington County jail on Hewitt Street.

LETTER: Darlington County has problem with stray animals

Darlington County, my adopted home, has a problem with unwanted and stray domestic animals – specifically dogs and cats. We see them running alongside and across roadways and inside mall parking areas. In the countryside, they are sometimes seen running in small packs.

Ground broken for new Society Hill Library

It was a long time coming, but Darlington County and Society Hill town officials broke ground Saturday morning on the site where a new public library will be built for Society Hill.

A performance of Mozart’s “Requiem” and Haydn’s “Te Deum,” presented by Coker College Music and performed by the Coker Singers and chamber orchestra, will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Hartsville.  Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Burry Bookstore will host S.C. Poet Laureate Marjory Wentworth and Author Batt Humphreys from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday during the Annual Christmas Open House. Wentworth will be signing copies of her children’s book “Shackles,” and Humphreys will be signing copies of his new book “Dead Weight.”

Darlington Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored Sara Rolfe of Hartsville to attend Carolina Coastal Adventure camp held at Lake Murray in October. The three-day water resources and conservation camp is sponsored by the Berkeley Soil and Water Conservation District, in partnership with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

Hartsville welcomes S.C. Junior Golf Association

This Saturday and Sunday, more than 110 high school athletes from all across the state will descend on the Hartsville Country Club to compete in the prestigious 12th Annual Junior Golf Players Championship. The Players Championship is the year-end event for the S.C. Junior Golf Association. 

Darlington School superintendent’s contract extended

During an executive session on Nov. 9, the Darlington County School District Board of Education renewed Superintendent Dr. Rainey Knight’s contract for two years.

Forestry Commission to award stimulus funds for tree planting, public safety

The South Carolina Forestry Commission, in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service, is pleased to announce that funds are available through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for the Community Forest Health Enrichment Assistance Program.  Approximately $850,000 is available to South Carolina’s city and town governments.

Council agrees to fund broadband study up to $5,000

Hartsville City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to fund up to $5,000 for a feasibility study into the possibility of creating a city-owned fiber optic network that would allow the city to offer broadband services to city residents and businesses on the open market.
