Toastmasters celebrates milestone with reception
This year Toastmasters International celebrates 85 years, and the local chapter held a reception to celebrate before their regular meeting on Oct. 26. Both mayoral candidates were also invited though only Pam Sansbury attended.
Council candidates discuss issues in forum
Candidates for Hartsville City Council outlined their positions and goals Tuesday during an open forum. The only contested council race on the ballot in Tuesday’s election is for the District 1 seat. Incumbent Adlena Graham is facing a challenge from Jannie Harriot.
Coker SAAC Committee Cleans Up Kalmia Gardens
The Coker College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) took time out of their weekend on Sunday afternoon to do a little community service. About 20 members of the SAAC spent the day at Kalmia Gardens helping to remove invasive plants from the flood plain of the Gardens.

Free medical clinics receive $70,000 grant
The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation presented a $70,000 grant to the Free Medical Clinic of Darlington County on Friday at Lawton Park in Hartsville.

Three scouts from Troup 7 earn Eagle status
Caleb Griggs, Noah Stanley and Thomas Chaplin have earned the Boy Scouts of America’s highest recognition, the rank of Eagle Scout. The scouts were recognized on Sept. 7 in a National Court of Honor for Boy Scout Troop 7 presided over by Scoutmaster Jeff Scott. Troop 7 is a club chartered by Lakeview Baptist Church.

Vandals destroy historic Byerly Baby sculpture in Hartsville
The Hartsville Building Commission is offering a $250 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for destroying the Byerly Baby statue in the Hartsville Museum’s Sculpture Courtyard, Den Latham, building manager for the commission, said.

Ovis Hill Farm and Clemson Extension have teamed together for two full days of family fun and educational activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. As part of Darlington County’s Farm-City Week celebration, this event provides the opportunity for families and children to learn that “The Farm is where Food is Born.“

Darlington County First Steps hosts Fun Fall Festival
Darlington County First Steps held a Fun Fall Festival at Fairfield Inn on Thursday as part of the monthly parents as teachers meeting. Officer Mica Griggs of the Hartsville Police Department was the guest speaker for the program and spoke on safety while trick or treating.

Ghost story writer comes to Hartsville Oct. 30
On Halloween eve, Tally Johnson, author of three books on South Carolina ghost stories, will be visiting Burry Bookstore from 4 to 5:30 p.m. to share some of his favorite ghost tales and sign copies of his new book “Ghosts of the Pee Dee.” This is a free event.
Boys & Girls Club takes part in celebration
The Hartsville Boys and Girls Club took part in the 9th Annual Lights On Afterschool celebration Thursday along with more than 7,500 other clubs in the nation as well as parents, members, local business leaders, educators and other officials.
Carolina Kids collects food, clothes for needy
Carolina Kids LLC collected eight, large trash cans full of food and hygiene items at Wal-Mart on Saturday. The group will distribute through the food through its Hunger Busters program, where Carolina Kids volunteers pack food bags at Southside and Brunson-Dargan, and the hygiene items at the Kids Closet.

The undefeated team Sonoco (6-0) were named the 2009 12 & Under Champions the team’s 12-7 victory against Gibson Transport on Saturday at Byerly Park.
Red Foxes stay perfect in region
The Hartsville Red Foxes rolled over the West Florence Knights 45-7 Friday at Kelleytown Stadium, improving to 8-1 on the season and staying perfect in region competition.
Cross country teams prepare for lower state competition
The Hartsville Red Foxes boys’ and girls’ cross country teams finished fourth and sixth in the regional meet in Sumter on Oct. 21 against Carolina Forest, Conway, South Florence, Sumter and West Florence.
