A 14-year-old boy is charged with murder following the fatal shooting of his pregnant mother and her unborn child Sunday night.
Cotton Harvest Bluegrass Festival strikes a chord with fans
The second annual fall bluegrass festival was held in Hartsville Oct. 24, 25 and 26. Pouring rain on Friday night moved the outdoor concert indoors but didn’t damper the enthusiasm of the performers or those attending. Saturday afternoon music fans were entertained by Church Street Blues, Deeper Shade of Blue, Sounds of Grass and Slope Valley bluegrass bands. On Sunday Church Street Blues performed bluegrass and gospel tunes for the congregation and guests at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Jurney – Bedenbaugh
Jessica Ann Jurney of Statesville, N.C., and Michael Marcus Bedenbaugh of Hartsville were joined in marriage Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the home of Roy and Reda Jurney. The Rev. Jim Justice performed the 4 p.m. ceremony.

Jennifer Jeanne Bussell and Logan Joseph Schiff of New York, N. Y., were married Oct. 18, 2008, at Hickory Ridge House, a bed and breakfast in Putney, Vt. Justice of the Peace Hester Caldwell performed the 2 p.m. outdoor ceremony.

A juvenile is facing a charge of murder following the fatal shooting of a pregnant Lamar area woman and her unborn child Sunday night.

Black Creek Arts Center preparing for fall classes
Ilona Smithkin will be following up her magnificent performance in the Long Lash Cabaret with a pair of oil painting workshops. She will be offering a landscapes oil painting class from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. the week of Oct, 27 - 31. The following week, Nov. 3 - 7, she will be offering a still life oil painting class from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Each workshop costs $135.

McBee girls’ tennis finishes season
The Lady Panthers of McBee’s tennis team has completed their season with a 4-5 record and will advance to the playoffs on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Hartsville High’s girls’ golf team took to the links Monday and Tuesday at Lexington Country Club for the 2008 state championship tournament.

Lady Cobras fall to Trojans in conference volleyball
Joanie Werling’s nine-point service run to open the third set helped stake Mount Olive to an early double-digit lead and the Trojans extended their winning streak to four with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-12 victory over Coker in Conference Carolinas women’s volleyball Wednesday at Kornegay Arena.
Cobras shutout Chowan
The Coker men’s soccer team earned their first shutout win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Chowan University on Wednesday night.
