Edward W. Mullins Jr. has been awarded the Lou Potter Award for lifetime achievement by the Defense Research and Trial Lawyer’s Association.

Mullins, a member of the Columbia law firm Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough, is the 13th lawyer in the country to receive associations most prestigious award. It recognizes Mullins’ leadership in the defense bar and in the community at large.

When chairman of Nelson Mullins, Mullins led the campaign to raise $1 million from its attorneys for the establishment of the Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough Center for Professionalism at the University of South Carolina School of Law.  He recently served as chairman of the Business Sponsors Committee of the first walk of the National Alliance of Mental Illness, which raised $100,000 for mental health in the Columbia Midlands. In 2007, he was named the Individual Fund Raiser of the Year by the Not For Profit Association of the Midlands.

Mullins is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the USC Law School. He is a former president of the S.C. Trial Defense Attorneys Association. He is a longtime member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and represents the southeastern states as a regent. Although he is a Columbia native, he has many family members and professional contacts in the Pee Dee, especially in Florence and Marion counties.
