The Sun News announces layoffs, other cuts

MYRTLE BEACH (AP) — The Sun News newspaper has announced it will eliminate 20 positions and reduce pay and work hours for its remaining staffers.
The paper announced Monday that the cuts will take effect on May 4.
In an announcement to employees, Pamela J. Browning, the newspaper’s president and publisher, said the Sun News will move to a 37 1/2-hour work week for hourly employees and will reduce pay for all salaried employees. Details of the pay cuts weren’t immediately available.
The layoffs affect advertising, circulation, news, operations, finance and administration departments.
The most recent layoffs and paycuts follow a Feb. 5 announcement by McClatchy Co., which owns The Sun News, that the company will further reduce operating expenses because of economic pressures and revenue declines.

IF you would reduce your advertising rates to a reasonable cost, sure it would require more paper but you could increase your revenues three or four times in my view… You’re way out of line with your prices and you should print classifieds every day.
