The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are starting this season with some new changes to their home field.
Pelicans General Manager North Johnson said when fans come to BB&T Coastal Field, he wants you to know this is not just any park, it's a ball park at the beach.
Johnson said, “This year with our music and our entertainment, it's going to be more of a beach feel to it, a lot of Jimmy Buffet will be playing you know maybe some General Johnson and some Chairman of the Board, you know a lot of good beach music.”
There is also a beach area, next to the visitor’s bullpen, complete with lifeguard chairs and plenty of sand is in full view of all the baseball action.
There's also Land Shark Landing, a bleacher area in the outfield where fans might have a chance to catch a home run ball.
The new picnic area near the right field side is a whole new seating area where fans can enjoy an all you can eat buffet before the game and enjoy your food while the game is being played.
Johnson said while the score of the game isn't something he and his staff can control, they can control the atmosphere of the stadium.
“So we can't control day to day who's in the line-up, who's even here, but what we can control is how much fun our fans are having during the games.” Johnson said.
Also back for another season is Dinger the dog, who's been entertaining fans for years.
This year Dinger has an assistant, Deuce, his younger brother.
The puppy, which already has quite a fan following, is in training for his first time on the field.
Johnson said, “We're working on now Deuce being able to go to the plate, pick up the player's bat's and bring them back so maybe the bat boys will be out of a job, we don't know, but we're going to have a lot of fun with it.”
There are also new seafood options at the concession stands like a shrimp basket, clam strips, and hush puppy products.
Johnson said he and his staff want baseball to be the main attraction, but they also want to see you having so much fun that maybe the ending score doesn't determine if you come back.
Fans will also going to get a chance to win some prizes and even make it on the field for some skits.
