Scott a true team player

The Hartsville High varsity football team will look toward 2009 after the 2008 season ended on Friday.

Leading the charge next year will be current junior running back Dre Scott, who also led the 2008 rushing attack for the Foxes.

And Scott likes the challenge.

He rolled up 1,057 yards on 164 carries. Scott also accounted for 13 of the Red Foxes’ touchdowns as he averaged 6.4 yards per carry.

“It’s been fun knowing that other defenses are trying to stop me,” Scott said of being this year’s leading rusher. “It’s challenging me to see what I can do.” He said he enjoys being a part of the offense of which opposing defenses must be wary.

Scott also said he doesn’t feel any pressure as the leading rusher either. He sounds like the consummate team player. “It doesn’t bother me because I have other people there for me. If they stop me then there’s Ronnie Jackson, Jason Jones, Eric Williams and Shawn Smith back there.”

Scott also understands that football is a team sport. When asked what the keys to the running game were this year, Scott answered without hesitation. “The offensive line. The offensive line has just done great things.”

The running back said he has been playing football since the age of eight, and he would like to play football in college.

However, Scott said his first goal is to go to college. He wants to major in electronic engineering and bring home a degree. He and his coach Jeff Calabrese said he does well in his classes.

Scott is 1,400 yards shy of the school’s career rushing record. And with his “team first” mindset, he just might make it.
