After two seasons, Mullins High School football head coach Ron Lanham will not return with the Auctioneers in the upcoming 2009 season.
Mullins School District 2 Superintendent Nathaniel Miller confirmed that Lanham’s contract, for the head football coach and athletic director jobs, will not be renewed and that the position is already being advertised with interviews planned for next week.
MSD2 requires that applicants have three years of head coaching experience and three years experience as athletic director. Lanham’s contract expires June 30, Miller said.
Lanham replaced Charles Elvington as coach and finished with a record of 7-13 during his stint.
District officials said it will be up to Lanham to decide if he wants to remain at the school as a physical education teacher.
Lanham said he was asked by administrative officials not to comment on the matter at this time, but called it an unfortunate situation and difficult time as he had a number of activities planned for his team during the summer. “We had a very good spring with kids working hard…nobody saw it coming,“ he said.
In addition to teaching, coaching football and athletic director, Lanham was a track and field coach at MHS.
