West Florence defensive lineman Malliciah Goodman and Myrtle Beach wide receiver Jamere Valentine have both been named finalists for the 2008 Mr. Football Award.

On Thursday, the U.S. Army officially announced Goodman’s selection to the ninth annual All-American Bowl, the premier high school football all-star showcase in the country. Goodman is the first selection from West Florence. He was chosen as one of 90 of the nations top seniors. Goodman leads the Knights and the Pee Dee with 14 sacks. The senior defensive end also has 63 tackles in a little more than nine games. Goodman has committed to Clemson, and hopes to graduate early and attend spring semester.

Valentine leads the Eastern Carolinas with 29 total touchdowns and almost 1,300 receiver yards.  He’s been Everett Golson’s favorite receiver in the Myrtle Beach offense all year, and also plays quarterback in goal line situations.  Valentine has had offers from two dozen schools, including Coastal Carolina, but it is waiting till after the season to make a decision about college.  Fellow Myrtle Beach standout Bruce Taylor was a finalist last year.

Other finalists are South Pointe quarterback Stephon Gilmore, Sumter running back Roderick McDowell, Calhoun County quarterback David Sims, Timberland offensive lineman Quinton Washington, Northwestern wide receiver Jarrett Neely, and Greenwood safety D.J. Swearinger.  The winner will be announced the second week of December.
