Local political analysts expected the race to be close because of each candidate’s popularity and the number of loyal supporters each had.

Boone announced he intended to run for re-election last fall, shortly after going public with his decision to switch political parties.

Boone announced he was switching to the Republican Party during an Oct. 24, 2007, speech on the steps of the Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation Library in Florence.

Boone said as a Republican, he joined other Republican elected officials in Florence and in the Palmetto State who believe in being aggressive in crime prevention.

Boone said he’s proud of his deputies and the work he and his staff have done during the past four years and he hopes to continue moving in a positive direction.

Gregg, who endorsed Boone after he retired from the office four years ago, said he decided to run against Boone because things were moving in a negative direction.

Gregg had been sheriff for 12 years before giving up the post.

Gregg announced he would run against Boone in November 2007 — a full year before elections were held for the position.

“I honestly think that Kenney’s a good guy and I think his heart is in and it’s where it needs to be,” Gregg said before the election. “I think he knows what he wants to do but I don’t think he’s laying the proper foundation.”

Boone said he plans to spend his next term in office concentrating on preventing youths from becoming involved in illegal activity.

“We want to continue with what we’ve done. I feel like (we need to expand on) some of our summer programs with our children,” he said. “Any given summer, we might contact maybe three or four hundred kids. But in Florence School District 1 alone, they unleash 16,000 kids. We need to try to reach more kids. That’s very much a passion for me.”

Boone joined the Florence County Sheriff’s Office in 1987.

He graduated from Florence-Darlington Technical College after earning an associate degree in criminal justice.

citizen4u- Sounds to me like you need to use your spellcheck or buy a dictionary so you won’t look so ignorant and uneducated online.

oneofficer its no use talking to a telephone pole fedup, tiredofitall, and voiceofreason are just that. I know Boone did the right thing no matter how good an officer is there is always one to replace them that are just as good should that be the case. There are a ton of good cops in this county. The officers that got fired are fired because Boone didnt want them there and thats the bottom line. If that makes you loose respect for him and not support him then thats their deal but they will be looking at the same thing that the other officers got, if in fact they are officers at the sheriffs dept. Their whole argument is that those officers were good workers and supported boone. Sounds to me that if you guys do work at the sheriffs office then you should be looking for a new job too.

one officer- It’s people like you that give officers of the law a bad name.  You are the type of person that won’t have to wait four years to be fired.  I’m sure you will get what you deserve long before that, because you run your senseless mouth too much.  That’s from one officer to another.

My last comment.  It is not about who won.  It is not about policies and procedures.  It is about good people losing their jobs, because certain deputies distorted the truth, made up rumors, or disliked these people and who had the ear of the sheriff and used the confidence he placed in them, to get rid of people.  They know who they are and if they can live with it, good for them.  It is about unfair tactics being use by others.  You are right about one thing…YOU DO NOT GET IT!!!!  But four years from now, if you have not retired, you will. Then let’s see how you feel about it then.  Let’s see how you feel about those who do this to you.  Personally, I hope it does not.  I hope by then the sheriff, whoever it may be, will check things out for himself rather than rely upon those with personal agendas.

Yeah your right I don’t get it, I didn’t read one worthless reply to this whole blog. I’m “tired of it all” too. The election was won if you put all your cards in on the opposition well you don’t have a job and that’s just how “political” jobs work. Particular reasons as to why they were let go I don’t know and don’t care to know. If the opposition had won I wouldn’t be here either. How about get a copy of the policy and procedures of the Sheriff’s Dept. “You work at the Sheriff’s Discretion” Everyone that takes this job knows that every 4 years an election happens. Technically speaking I’m a tax payer too, therefore I’m somewhat self-employed. Kissing A.., yeah typical scapegoat for any complainer.

one officer:

Yes Kenny Boone won and some of us writing even voted for him, however, he lost our respect because of these firings.  You just do not get it.  What people are writing about is not who won, but the unfair treatment of some good deputies, not a.. kissers lke you, who lost their jobs, because of people like you who make up rumors and take them to the boss (because you think that it will make you look better and save your job).  In fact your comments sound just like a deputy that I know who rides around all day doing nothing but running his mouth and earns a good salary at our expense.

citizen4u:

In reference to Jimmy Gregg signs being in the City limits, well you better go ride around, MANY Kenny Boone signs are sitting on City property. I can give you a list of where you can go collect these signs, as they need removing. Did not matter if you were City or County, you had the priviledge of voting on Sheriff.  Your facts are so distorted that you border on stupid.  Also, going back and reading some of your comments, you appear to have more of problem with Ms. Gregg than Mr. Gregg, so I wonder, are you the one who insulted her and her husband to the point she responded in a negative manner?  You appear to be a very angry person who could benefit from counsuling.

For the person that was talking about somebody’s wife is tacky and very low down. I just hope somebody like yourself don’t work for the sheriff dept.
