City councilman misrepresents, hurts Florence
Published: May 29, 2009
Ed Robinson unwisely and unnecessarily played the race card Wednesday night as the Florence City Council discussed its 2009-10 budget and whether to add 18 more police officers.
This newspaper called for the city councilman’s resignation earlier this month because of his personal conduct and arrest record.
We reiterate our call after Robinson’s ridiculous comments about the city’s police.
Robinson, who is black, said he would not support hiring more officers because police “go out and harass my people and destroy their lives.”
We find it hard to believe the city councilman from District 2 has any support left with this continued polarizing behavior.
It’s the police department’s job to protect residents from crime, and if more officers are the answer, then the council has a responsibility to move in that direction based on facts, not fallacy. Robinson’s insinuation about Florence police harassing the black community was offensive. If anyone’s sensitive to what’s happening in the black community, it’s Florence Chief of Police Anson Shells, who is black.
An apology would be in order from Robinson to Shells and his police officers.
Robinson characterized his residence as being “in the heart of a ghetto” in Florence. He said he has never had any problems with gangs. Therefore, why should the city’s police force hire any more officers?
“This is not good for my community,” Robinson said. “All they (police) will do is go out and harass my people and destroy their lives. I’ve got a problem with that.”
Robinson’s comments likely will stir up passion among the councilman’s supporters, who wonder why many arrests involve black offenders.
“Why is it that 75 to 80 percent of those in jail are black when the biggest crimes are in the white neighborhoods?” Robinson asked. “More and more police officers will never solve the problem.”
The crime problem in Florence is the No. 1 issue facing the city. It helped carry Mayor Stephen J. Wukela into office.
“When I was campaigning for mayor, I had people telling me they were prisoners in their own homes because of gangs,” Wukela said. “They asked me to help put a stop to this. We’ve got to protect the people of Florence.”
A proposed police substation downtown would make Florence safer after dark, we believe, and the decision to spread out hiring more officers over time is smart, considering the tough economy.
Putting more officers on the payroll will cut overtime, making it easier for the city and its police department to make their budgets.
The outburst from Robinson fails to consider safety in the black community. Everyone in Florence values personal safety. Robinson’s concerns about a lack of guidance in the black community might be accurate. But they’re misguided when Robinson ties the problems facing young people to police conduct.
“These kids don’t feel free, I don’t feel free,” Robinson said. “The minute they step out of line for the smallest thing, they face a police officer. They are charged with a crime they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It keeps them from getting jobs.
“It’s not fair, and it’s not right. You are destroying a generation of kids. My concern is these kids are the ones who will be losing if we hire more police officers.”
Robinson is wrong. More police officers would make the community safer in every neighborhood.
Chief Shells would like to use the additional officers to enhance community policing and gang enforcement. Any additional manpower would be a positive step forward.
By falsely accusing the police of destroying lives, Robinson undercuts the brave men and women who protect his freedom. And he misrepresents the very people who elected him to office.

As I’ve stated previously, there are any number of qualified persons living in this area who could defeat him. Voter/citizen apathy or electoral hijinx notwithstanding, of course. If we expect our city to climb out of the past and ascend to it’s future, then the time is NOW…
I suspect the people in power don’t want to go through the removal process, and would rather let the voters handle this at election time. More’s the pity, since the populace wants him out so badly.
Ed,This letter is not to make youself look good. I do not live in your poor district but I will help a person in any way God willing to get you out of office….Yes, it takes our Gov. Sanford
to put you out the door but your re-election will come again and by then MAYBE your neighbor, preacher, or someone in your POOR (as you say) district will say to the people of Florence they would like to run but have
NO Funds—-thats when Florence Citizens
WILL BE THERE TO HELP GET YOU OUT ONCE
AND FOR ALL…..Yes, your district needs to be CLEANED—-YOU HAVE IT AND WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY….how low can
you go? i HAVE SEEN YOUR WONDERFUL CRIME
RECORD—-YOUR MUST BE PROUD OF YOURSELF
but I know your neighbors, friends and family are shameful for YOUR ACTIONS and to top it WHAT AN EXAMPLE YOU HAVE SHOWN THE FUTURE ADULTS OF YOUR DISTRICT.
Ed, if you aren’t doing anything wrong the police won’t bother you. Teach the kids in your district to get an education and respect the police and everyone else around them. If these kids listen to you they will all end up involved in gangs and crime. If you are writing bad checks, driving under suspension or whatever else that is not legal the chances are you will get caught eventually. The police are not picking on you, you simply keep breaking the law. Help your neighbors turn your neighborhood into something other than a ghetto, make it a decent place to live—of course you will have to move to make it decent! Can anyone tell me what area or neighborhoods are included in his district?
He is a sorry excuse for a human being,I hope he didn’t teach your child how to Drive or did he loose his driving school also along with the few brain cells that he had?and by the way those few brain cells never fully developed.Thats why everything is racist to him.
Councilman Ed Robinson is a disgrace and an embarrassment to all citizens in Florence. He makes the voters in his single member district look like fools. Is there not anyone in that district that is capable of running against this guy? I cannot hardly believe that the members of his district consider him a qualified representative. Maybe no one in that district really cares.
Okay .. I misspoke ... witch hunt = bad choice of words.
My point is this .. surely there is someone out there who could expose Ed Robinson for what he is.
If anybody has evidence that Mr. Robinson has embezzled taxpayer money .. then come forward.
This is the only way we can get out of the public eye and back where he belongs (“the ghetto as Ed calls it”)
I would have to agree. Lisa, that wasn’t the best use of the term “witch hunt”.
Let me see here…Ed Robinson’s record as city councilman…
- Resisting Arrest (because if any of us “little” people banged on the side of the door inside the police cruiser, you know we would get NAILED for resisting arrest)
- Embezzlement (Oh, Mayor Wukela, what happened to the investigation into the Juneteenth funds, I recall during the campaign you said you were going to do that!)
- Countless DUS’s
- Assault
...and that’s just in the last 5 years!
How is this sorry excuse for a man even a dog catcher. I know if I was running a business, I wouldn’t hire him (and no Ed, it’s not because you’re black, it’s because you are a criminal.)
Lisa…
Can’t you engage the grey matter before typing? A witch hunt is a term used to describe an unwarranted action against an accused person. Witches don’t really exist, and calling for action by invoking that metaphor only lends credence to the accused. The only thing worse you could have done was blabber something racial. If that had happened, I might have thought you were Ed himself. As it is, if you aren’t one of his supporters, you’re definetly giving them aid & comfort.
Ed’s already done enough to get himself, if only someone in authority would act.
I encourage everyone to use there resources and ingenuity to reach out and find SOMETHING .. ANYTHING that you can use on Mr. Ed to get him off the council.
Let’s turn this into a good old fashion witch hunt!
Ed is a racist. He doesn’t deserve to continue in his position. The sooner he is out of office and behind bars for his crimes, the better off this city will be. The time has long since past that our other elected officials should seek his removal if he won’t remove himself. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Ed were connected to these gangs somehow himself; by association at the very least.
