Weekend off to a deadly start on Pee Dee roads
Three separate accidents claimed the lives of three Pee Dee residents since Friday.
The first one happened at around 7:40 p.m. Friday, on Vox Highway near Johnsonville.
Florence County Coroner Bubba Matthews said 29-year-old Cornell Brockington was driving at a high rate of speed, when his vehicle ran off the road and flipped several times.
Matthews said the force of the wreck threw Brockington from the vehicle, where he died at the scene.
The second accident left a pedestrian dead.
It happened overnight on Highway 41 alternate near Highway 917 in Marion County.
Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson identified the victim as 50-year-old Kenny Coleman of the Zion community.
Richardson says the body was found on Highway 41 about one mile from Coleman’s home.
He also said Coleman was hit at least two times, and that the second driver stopped and called authorities at around 5 a.m. Saturday.
Richardson says the body will be sent to M.U.S.C. in Charleston for an autopsy.
The highway patrol is investigating the crash.
The third deadly accident happened at around 7 a.m. Saturday on Mcallister Mill road in Florence County.
Coroner Matthews says 29-year-old Melanie Prosser was driving home from work at a high rate of speed, when she lost control of her car and it slid into a median.
Matthews says the vehicle eventually slammed into a ditch and burst into flames.
Matthews says Prosser was burned beyond recognition.
Her body will be sent to Charleston for an autopsy as well.

I have read all these comments and I dont believe that anyone was passing judgement on Malenie or slandering her good name, why is the family being so defensive? Because they are grieving badly. Be politically correct, God NEVER gives a reason as to why these things happen! People need to learn from other peoples mistakes and not take life for granted. It could have been worse, I lost 3 family members in a head on collision because another driver was speeding and fell asleep behind the wheel at 6:30 in the morning, two of which were under 5 years of age. So I say thank GOD nobody else was involved in this tragedy. My heart goes out to this womans family, sorry for your loss.
God sometimes doesnt give us the why as to his reasons for taking our loved ones.
However, who are we to sit in judgement of anyone?
I know Mel personally, My grandson adored her, her smile was contagious and she was one of the most giving people I will ever have the pleasure of knowing.
Nothing will bring her back, but dont judge her by what you read, The least you can do is know that, hearts are broken because she was taken from us, and dont EVER say Mel didnt think her life or those of others werent precious. No one respected others as much as she did.
My grandson rode with her thousands of times, and returned with a toy and a smile. I ask the poster above. Your words are just as painful as you “claim” Mels speeding was, maybe you as well need to slow down…
We love you Mel…

my first thoughts were of anger! and how dare you slander my sister!. yes she was speeding..however there were reasons for that. she was tired and wanting to go home. you neglected to mention she fell asleep and flipped several times. which led to her untimely death!. my sister appreciated her life and others life with great respect!. I’m sure your job Intel’s you to look at the facts or so it seems?. but please don’t label my now deceased sister as a reckless speed demon. your simple small words have pecked away more of our pride and have tarnished Melanie’s memory. for shame…..
to the person (momof4) i understand that a judgemental bafoon’s first reaction to something that you felt was wrong but please try to understand that your comments has hurt the prosser family and has made my mother shed yet another tear for my dead baby sister. now you live with the shame.
when will ppl learn driving at high speeds dont get you home at all!!! have been passed so many times by ppl that think life is forever for them because they are young. The man that was walking more than likely was hit by another person who thinks the need for speed is the way of life!!!
Life is perious but as you read the new noone seems to think so..
