Scholarship established in memory of Marion High student

FLORENCE — The Jonathan Chase Lee Scholarship has been established at Francis Marion University by his parents, David and Shana Lee; brother, Brent Lee; paternal grandparents, Robert and Georgia Lee; maternal grandparents, Bill and Kaye Singleton; and uncle, Stephen Singleton.

The scholarship was established to honor the memory of Lee, a senior from Marion High School who drowned in the Little Pee Dee River on May 22 after becoming trapped in a current.

Because Lee was planning to attend FMU, his family thought it fitting to establish a scholarship at the university in his honor.

“The university community is honored to have Chase’s family pay tribute to his memory in this way,” Jay Dowd, executive director of the FMU Foundation and vice president for development, said in a press release issued by the university. “It has been a distinct pleasure working with them to establish this scholarship.”

Lee attended Marion High School and developed a reputation for being a dependable and well-liked student. He had completed all of his requirements for graduation and was awarded the Life Scholarship to attend FMU. Shana Lee, who is a 2007 graduate of the nursing program at FMU, said her son was excited about attending FMU.

The Jonathan Chase Lee Scholarship will benefit a student of Marion High School who also is a resident of Marion. The student must demonstrate financial need, as well.
