S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics will hold reunion
More than 100 graduates of the S.C. Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics are expected to return to their old stomping grounds for a walk down memory lane as the school holds its first “all-class reunion” beginning Friday.
The classes of 1990 through 2008, faculty, staff and their families have been invited to participate in the two-day event to commemorate the school’s 20th anniversary.
Jacqulyne Pouncey, public relations coordinator for the Governor’s School’s Foundation, said this is the first time the school has had a reunion of this nature.
“Typically in years past, they’ve had small (events) around Christmas time, which were a little more applicable for the students still in undergrad(uate school),” Pouncey said. “This is definitely something alumni wanted to do.
“We feel like we’ve reached a pretty big milestone and having our alumni come back to Hartsville is definitely a way to celebrate,” she said.
The reunion begins with a cocktail reception from 7 to 9 p.m. at the home of school President Dr. Murray Brockman.
Brockman said the reunion will be a great time for many of the alumni to see the school in its current building and renew old friendships.
“There’s been a lot of milestones since that first junior class came in 1988,” Brockman said. “The members of that charter class are all over the state and all over the world, and we’ve had 20 wonderful classes since then.
“It’s a joy to be welcoming all these young (people) back,” he said. “I think this will mean a lot to them.”
The reunion continues with a luncheon and tour of the school from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the school.
Dr. Carlanna Hendrick, a history teacher at the school, will be the keynote speaker.
Hendrick teaches American History and Western Civilization, and serves as chair of the humanities division.
Brockman and former school President Dr. Lee Cox also are scheduled to speak.
The reunion will end with a “Memory Lane Dance Party” from 7 to 11 p.m.
On Thursday, the school will have its 20th Annual Convocation at 2 p.m. to award academic letters to returning seniors and welcome incoming juniors.
The convocation will feature keynote speaker Dr. Harris Pastides, president of the University of South Carolina, who took office in July.
