Marion Intermediate School students, teachers and staff worked on a number of fund raising activities this past school year.

For instance, Principal Tim Felder, said, the school raised $8,000 for Relay for Life. This past week, Assistant Principal Sharron Crowner, four MIS students and Felder presented the City of Marion with a $120 donation that they want to go toward the construction of a new city fire substation. The school used a creative incentive measure to raise the funds.

“It was based on MAP testing scores taken during the spring. Students scoring a five-point gain and above raised money according to the number of points,” Crowner said. Fifth graders Faith Oglesby, Arrion Swinney, Nomari Swinney and sixth grader John Swinton took part in the presentation on campus outside of the school.

“We have community service fundraising projects all through the year,” Crowner said. Fire Chief Alan Ammons said he was grateful for the kind gesture.

“We really appreciate it and it shows the community support in a needed project.” Ammons also said he looks forward to enhancing the emergency response time in the area because of the new facility.
