A 53-year-old Cades man riding his bicycle died Saturday after he was struck by a car, S.C. Highway Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.

The identity of the man wasn’t available from the Williamsburg County Coroner’s office.

The crash happened on New Zion Road near Lake City, Brouthers said.

The man was traveling north on the road when he was struck by a Pontiac driven by a 64-year-old New Zion man.

Troopers said the driver of the vehicle also was traveling north, but couldn’t see the bicyclist because he was wearing dark clothing, Brouthers said.

The driver couldn’t swerve and prevent the collision because of oncoming traffic, he said.

The crash is under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
