At least 17 people arrested in drug bust

The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office annouced Saturday that it, the Bennettsville Police Department Narcotics Unit, the McColl Police Department, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and The State Law Enforcement Division had arrested 17 individuals from Bennettsville, McColl and Clio on drug-related charges ranging from possession of marijuana to distribution of crack cocaine.

Most of the arrests occurred Friday and Saturday. The arrests come after a nine-month investigation prompted by residents’ complaints of drug sales within Marlboro County. During Friday and Saturday, the Bennettsville Sheriff’s Office seized vehicles, various forms of ammunition (including assault rifles and pistols), money, crack and powder cocaine and controlled substances being used by suspects within the investigations.

Marlboro County Investigator Jamie G. Seales said the arrests mark a pivotal moment in the county’s fight against crime.

“A lot of people were arrested for second or third time offenses. By putting a couple of major distributors in jail, it’s going to slow down a lot of the crime and narcotic activity,” Seales said.

He noted, however, the job is not finished.

“We’re very pleased with it, but we know we’re a long way from accomplishing what we want to accomplish. We continue to encourage citizens to call and give us information,” he said, noting that much of the results of the investigation was helped by tips from citizens.

If you know of drug crimes or other forms of criminal activity within your area, call the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office at (843) 479-5605.

For chronic pain, anxiety and nervous issues, marijuana is a safer and better ‘drug’ than any man-made prescription. If used in excess, it can damage your lungs. If Rx meds are used in excess, they can damage all kinds of things. Marijuana shouldn’t be illegal. As Americans, we should be able to decide for ourselves how we treat our bodies. We don’t have too much ‘freedom’ after all. If law enforcement refused to enforce the marijuana ban it would eventually be legalized. Man made drugs (crack, heroine, etc) is probably best left illegal though.

Hey William,
I’ll bet you didn’t know that one joint is about the same as a whole pack of cigs with all the tar and resins. That’s the stuff that clogs your lungs. The nicotine is only a stimulant that you become addicted too and crave just like any other stimulant.Their your lungs so do with them what you wish.Look back on the 38 years you been smoking cigs and weed though and total up the costs.I’ll bet you could pay cash for your house with all that money. Now thats enough to take your breath away huh?

No one should be locked up for marijuana,it’s not half as bad as cigarettes.I’ve been smoking both for 38 years and now the cigarettes are taking a toll.

It is great to have a Sheriff that cares enough about his county to do the job that he was elected to do.  Keep up the great work!!!
