South Carolina’s top prosecutor says he does not think Gov. Mark Sanford should resign after the governor admitted to the world he was having an affair with a South American woman.
Attorney General Henry McMaster, in Myrtle Beach for a fundraiser for Rep. Thad Viers, spoke to News13 about the Sanford scandal.
McMaster says he thinks the people of South Carolina should give Sanford and his family the privacy they’ve requested.
“We all know what’s happened,“ said McMaster.
He also does not believe the governor used any state resources to further his romantic pursuits with the woman, who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Several news organizations report a state-issued vehicle left in the parking lot last weekend at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, where Sanford flew in and out of to go see the woman.
“There’s been no evidence presented to anyone that I know of,“ said McMaster.
“As far as I know, there have been no laws broken, but there are a lot of things that need to happen in this state,“ he said. “We need to get together getting them done.“

I empathize with the Sanford family (ALL OF THEM) but there is one of them who had a choice. If the people of SC did not have faith in Andre Bauer’s leadership, he would not be the second in command. Even the Lt. Gov. did not have any means of communicating with the governor; do we not see that this man’s personal self indulgence gives him reason to forget about his office? So please Mark Sanford, go home and work out your personal life and do for your wife and children what the State of SC needed you to do while you were AWOL, take care of business. Henry McMaster’s comments are no surprise. McMaster says we have work to be done…only after the work is done in Argentina? Dah!!!!! I could see if you had work to be done for the family in your residence on Sullivan’s Island, but even then you need to keep the people who pay your salary informed of your whereabouts. That consideration might have prompted you to not allow the “spark” to go further. I think those who witnessed Sanford’s condemnation of Clinton may now be less willing to speak more honestly about Mark Sanford because they know that their day may be just around the corner. We need the little black book from the scandal of years past. That is why the “johns” were not named but the “jane” was. Wake up ladies…including you wives…Learn from Jenny. She has her priorities in order. May God sustain you Jenny Sanford.
For those of you that want to give the governor a cookie for coming forward and admitting his adultery, wait one minute. Let me enlighten you. The only reason he came forward is because evidence of his affair had already been leaked to the State newspapaper. The “steamy” emails between the governor and his lover were somehow given to the newspaper back in Dec. 08. The newspaper decided not to publish the emails then because there were questions regarding the authenticity. So, that alone should lead us all to wonder why would the governor come forward now. I will tell you why. He most likely didn’t have a choice. He knew that he should either come forward and confess or the confession would be done for him. LIke I have said before, yes people make mistakes. But this guy built a career on family values and doing the right thing at all costs. He makes himself look completely incompetent by having an affair, especially given the fact that many lawmakers and citizens are still upset about the foolishness he tried to pull with the stimulus money. I could never defend this guy.
Well maybe the AG should go to
I swear, the next person who brings up the Clinton impeachment really needs to go read a frickin book…
The charges against Clinton were PURGURY not adultery!!! He lied under oath!!!
The only place that still exists with laws ont he book that are enforced regardling adultery is the UCMJ
Angelswalk, Sanford was wrong for using any state money or vehicle and abandoning his position without notification.
Fact: Sanford as a Congressman voted to impeach ex President Clinton and was very vocal about his position on family values.
Opinion: Because of Sanford past position and voting recording on family values he should resign.
Fact: The Attorney General’s Office released an opinion that Poker Runs in SC are illegal.
Opinion: FCSO and Kenny Boone should stop having poker runs that are in violation of state laws. There should be one law for all, not one for one group and another for others. There are citizen in this county that have lost a lot, because of being charge with gambling, which is the same law the FCSO is violating and charging others with.
ATLANTA (Reuters) – South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, facing pressure to resign over an extramarital affair, said on Thursday he would repay state funds he used for an official trip to Argentina during which he met his mistress. you must be kidding!!!!! Is this the kind of jerk the people of SC want as govenor. He should be exiled to Argentina.Time to resign,if you have any decency left Mr. Sanford.
“Posted by ( CitizenRights ) on June 25, 2009 at 2:51 pmHenry McMaster says no law was broken or he does not think that state money was use to further pursuit a relationship with the mistress. Henry, what about the SC Code of Law 16-15-60?SECTION 16-15-60. Adultery or fornication. Any man or woman who shall be guilty of the crime of adultery or fornication shall be liable to indictment and, on conviction, shall be severally punished by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars nor more than five hundred dollars or imprisonment for not less than six months nor more than one year or by both fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the court. The governor sworn to uphold the laws of SC, and the office of governor. This code of law is in the same section as prostitution. I think the McMaster should be looking if state money was used and not waiting on others to bring this information to the Attorney General’s Office. This is another example of the law for one group and not others. Second example is the Florence County Sheriff Office’s poker run that is violate of state law and the Attorney General’s Office has released an opinion of such, but no action in this matter. SC 16-19-10 and SC 16-19-40.See opinion of Attorney General below:

Since you are changing the subject here citizenright, as always, don’t you think that same principle applies to an officer who uses his patrol vihicle for the same purpose of lacivious behavior or his time on the clock for the city or county for that same type of behavior? Do you think that type officer should be exempt? Do you think an officer who used his positions of power should harm people in this way and much worse ways and still just get his mess swept under the rug? And have apologies made to him?
Not that this applies to any current officer that I know of. But I am asking, since you do always want to change the subject to smear the sheriffs office. Let me also say the scenario I speak of did not happen under Kenney Boone’s watch, you can believe that!
OH and if you put every man who has strayed in prison for it, we would have few men walking in the free world. Get real.
Are you kidding me,fire him if he broke a law!Ninety percent of the people in our great state break laws on a daily bases!Speeding is breaking the law,not giving a signal when turning is breaking the law, drinking and driving is breaking the law,and I could go on,it’s a good thing you don’t lose your job everytime you break a law!And by the way people who break the laws mentioned above not only make your insurance higher, they KILL innocent people!Again I say what he done was wrong, but he has admitted his wrong, and I promise you he has and will pay for his wrong for a long time to come!
Let us see what McMaster does. If he upholds the law, thumbs up. Fire both him and Sanford if the law in the other comment isn’t upheld.
I’m not a big fan of Gov.Sanford, but I can’t understand peoples reaction to this story. What he did was VERY wrong, but at least he was man enough to admit what he had done.I guess if he had brought his mistress to the state house and lied about it (gave his word!!)to the people, that he hadn’t had sexual relations with that woman,he would be considered one of S.C. greatest governors. This is all politics as usual. If he had not turned down the stimulus money this wouldn’t be as big a story, again what he done was wrong, but you without sin, cast the first stone!(just as in the story in the Bible, there would be no accusers left)
