Horry County schools ramp up security with ID check

Horry County schools continue to add layers of security.

What had been a pilot program last year is now a permanent fixture in all Horry county schools.

The ID check-in requires any visitor coming in to the school to have their driver’s license scanned into a computer linked to some local and national databases that check criminal history.

Horry County schools spokeswoman Teal Britton said the ID check is just one more addition to layers of school security.  Visitors to Horry county high schools and middle schools have to pass through metal detectors, employees in all the schools have photo ID badges, and there are cameras outside of the school monitoring activity.

Britton said another layer will soon be added when a buzzer system is added to school entrances.
