Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
Even though thousands filled the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Wednesday for the 15th Annual Hospitality Association job expo, that number didn’t quite line up with the number of vendors present.
Expo organizers say the current economic condition is to blame. Pauline Levesque of the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association said that last year’s expo brought in 120 vendors but that number dramatically shrank to just 60 this time around.
“Across the industry across the board we are down in all of the categories not just one over another,” said Levesque, “that really is the reflection of the statistics you see coming out on unemployment numbers.”
Xavier Meier with the Hospitality Association of South Carolina was one of the 60 vendors who said that the hospitality industry is taking a hard hit just like any other. That’s why he added, there were hardly any restaurant businesses present at Wednesday’s job expo.
“In this service industry we have such a high turn over,” explained Meir, “that there are a number of jobs out there that we’re not too sure of.“
Levesque also explained to News 13 that because there is such a high demand for job opportunities that people are seeking out employers instead of employers coming out to venues like the convention center.
“Bottom-line 1,800 jobs will be filled this week and in the next couple of months more people will be hired as a result of the job expo,” said Levesque, “and hopefully the economy will pick up during the summer and there will be even more opportunities.”

I have lived in So.Carolina a little over 3 years. What I have come to learn
is there are no protection rights for employees, however being that this is
“ A RIGHT TO WORK STATE”, the employees are the people doing the work
and keeping company doors open as well as upper mgmt.and business owner’s to keep doors open.We (employees) always have to fight for our rights and even then it’s the employer’s word over ours. It’s the laws that need revising, as well as mgr’s, administration dept’s. that need to be reviewed. This should be a state where unions do need to come in and the employees would benefit. I feel it is the “Right to Abuse the Employee “ state. We have no rights, we to are civilians with rights!
