Helping to celebrate any event, fireworks add to the festive exerbuerance that often accompanies the “out-with-the-old and in-with-the-new” atmosphere of saying good-bye to the past year and hello to the new one ... contributing especially to the magic of midnight on New Year’s Eve ...

Often, the prospect of putting the past behind allows us to hope for a brighter, more dynamic future. And so it is with with 2009. On this New Year’s Eve, the Star & Enteprise Staff is offering best wishes for a brighter New Year to all its readers, those of our more immediate online version and our weekly published print edition.
In the 101st volume of the Star, published on Jan. 5, 1948, the editors wrote that the new year would see new construction on the newspaper’s 100 Fairlee address. There was to be a 15x22 feet expansion to house the newspaper’s offices, two Linotypes and rest rooms. Hardly could the editors have imagined the computerization of their industry and the ability to turn the county’s weekly newspaper into a daily source for news.

May this year, as 1948, be one of realized hopes and dreams and of prosperity and health for us all, regardless of the changes to come.
