No motorcycle? No problem. This year’s committee has added a special feature for non-bikers who’d like to support the Poker Run, cancer research and the Marion County Relay for Life. “We have chartered buses to take 57 folks around so they can get their cards,“ John Gallo, a managing partner at the Complex, said. The fee to participate is still $20 per person, he said.

The poker run is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s Marion County Relay for Life. Participants ride to five locations, drawing a poker card at each. The individual or team with the best hand wins the grand price of $1,500. The Poker Run begins at 9 a.m. with registration at the Carolina Entertainment Complex on U.S. Highway 501 on Aug. 23 and ends at the complex, with the band Sideswiped playing at 7:30 p.m. The registration fee of $20, along with a $5 per playing passenger fee, includes a barbecue chicken dinner, served with baked beans, slaw, bread and a drink.

Additionally, organizers said, Custom Bike Builder Russell Marlowe of Russell Marlowe Custom Cycles will be at the event.

Camping at the complex site will be available for participants who want to arrive on Friday night, Gallo said, adding that he hopes the camping will encourage more bike riders from North Carolina and surrounding areas to participate in the event. The AVM Poker Run committee established the route and said locations include spots in Conway, North Myrtle Beach and Little River. This past year’s poker run had 100 participants and raised more than $2,000, committee member Paula Roland said.

This year’s committee, made up of AVM employees, is preparing for 500 participants. AVM is a Mullins-based factory that manufactures gas and lift supports. Committe members include Paula Roland, Dena Scott, Darlene Dadds, Dot Douglas, Shelby Campbell, Betty Owens, Ellen Smoak, Glenn Atkinson, Dan McDonald, Ken Hasty, Jimmy Turbiveville, Nelson Rogers and Kenny McDaniel.
