Sylvia Whitmire Askins
Sylvia Whitmire Askins of Lake City, 68, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008.
A funeral was at, Thursday, Aug. 7 in the Lake City First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Born in Greenville on Nov. 04, 1939, Mrs. Askins was a daughter of Rosa Robinson Whitmire and the late Guy Roland Whitmire and was married to C. B. Askins, Jr. of Lake City.
Surviving are her mother, Rosa Whitmire of Florence,; her husband, C.B. Askins Jr. of the home; two sons, Carson Askins of Murrells Inlet and Scott Askins (Tina) of Lake City; a brother, Tom Whitmire of Dallas, Texas; three granddaughters, Julia Askins of Murrells Inlet, Sophia Askins of Lake City, and Ginnifer Hartman of Murrells Inlet; and three grandsons, Billy Askins of Murrells Inlet, and Zack and Joshua Askins of Lake City.
Andrew Eugene “Gene” “Bushwacker” Crawford
Andrew Crawford of Kingstree, 62, husband of Jeanette Kinder Crawford, died Aug. 5, 2008 in his residence.
A funeral was Friday, Aug. 8 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Born in Berkley County, Mr. Crawford was a son of the late Andrew “Bully” and Ada Peagler Crawford. He was an area resident since 1972, coming from Bonneau/St. Stephen area. Mr. Crawford worked with the SCDOT of Kingstree as a mechanic and enjoyed fishing, hunting, his family and mechanic work.
Surviving are his loving wife, Jeanette “Tiger” Kinder Crawford of the home; a daughter, Angela (Randy) Burns of Bonneau; three step-sons, Ben (Sharon) Johnson, Henry (Heather) Johnson and Cliff Johnson all of Cades; a brother, Conway (Teresa) Crawford of Stanley, N.C.; two sisters, Tina (Cody) Mullinax of Moncks Corner and Dale (John) Headden of Bonneau; nine grandchildren, Joshua Crawford, Austin Byrd, Drake, Dakota and Hunter Johnson, Jonathan and Laura Gowdy, Shawn and Nicole Pack.
Sammy Gaymon
James Samuel “Sammy” Gaymon of Scranton, 65, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 in his residence after suffering a heart-attack.
A funeral was Wednesday, Aug. 6 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Newtown Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Hattie Jane Locklair, Allie Wilkes and Anna Martin and a brother, William Gaymon.
Born on March 12, 1943, Mr. Gaymon was a son of the late Thomas Samuel Gaymon and the late Madlean Hewitt Gaymon. He was a member of Buellah Lodge of A.F.M. # 159, retired as owner and operator of his trucking business and later worked as a welder for Watford Welding. Mr. Gaymon enjoyed fishing with his family.
He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
Surviving are his wife, Dottie Gaymon of the home; two daughters, Tammy Snow (Joey) of Pilot Mountain, N.C. and Donna Humphries (Jared) of Lake City; a step-daughter, Sandra Parkhurst of Scranton; a step-son, Joey Chockley (Lori) of Dalzell; two sisters, Carrie Nell Wilkes of Scranton and Willa Mae Springs (Hoyt) of Lake City; a brother, Jackie Gaymon (Trish) of Scranton; two granddaughters, Allison Prosser of Scranton and Sidney Chockley of Johnsonville; two grandsons, Dustin Chockley and Jeremy Chockley, both of Pamplico; and two step-grandsons, Will and Ben Humphries, both of Lake City.
Wilbur Hanna
Wilbur Hanna of Lake City, 80, died on Friday.
A funeral was Wednesday from Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by Pastor Jerry L. Gadsden and Rev. William Bowser. Burial followed in Ninevah United Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was predeceased by wife, Carolyn Creola Kale, siblings: Willie James, Esau, Joseph, Ethel, Allie Bell, and Rosa Hanna and Leck Singletary.
Born in Florence County, Mr. Hanna was a son of the late George and Henretta Singletary Hanna.
He attended the public schools of Florence County. He was a retired Pinhokker Tobacco Warehouseman in S.C., N.C., Tenn., and Fla. He was a member of Ninevah United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his daughter, Pastor Betty Ann Logan of Baltimore, MD.; a sister, Annie Lee Adams of Lake City; a grandchild; special friend, Bessie Metchell of N.C.; nieces, nephews.
Earl Dean Miller
Earl Dean Miller of Pamplico, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2008, in a Florence health care facility after an illness.
A funeral was Friday, Aug. 8 in Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Woodside Cemetery, Pamplico.
Memorials may be made to Pamplico Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 532, Pamplico, 29583.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
Born in Andrews, Mr. Miller was a son of the late John Elmon and Lillie Douglas Miller. He was a member of the 1259th Combat Engineers when he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church since 1955 for 46 years and had attended Beulah Free Will Baptist Church since 2000. He was a member of the American Legion Pamplico Post No. 98, had been associated with the Pamplico Fire Department, was an EMT for the rescue squad for 32 years and a former member of town council for six years. He worked with Southeastern Steel for 19 years and Marsh Lumber Co. for 12 years. Since retirement, he had been associated with Mr. D’s Bar-B-Que Restaurant.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy T. Miller of Pamplico; sons, Bobby Dean Miller of Pamplico and Don (Debra Yarborough) Miller of Coward; daughter, Ann Miller (Legrande) Hicks of Charleston; sister, Mary K. Lyday of Pisgah Forest, N.C.; grandchildren, Kevin (Angie) Hicks of Summerville, Joey Miller of Florence, Mandy (Karl) Rasmussen of Charleston, Daniel Miller and Courtney Miller, both of Coward; great-grandchildren, Caelyn and Brianna Rasmussen of Charleston; and special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Lee of Pamplico and Jean DeCamps of Johnsonville.
Billy Norton
Billy Lee Norton of Florence, 72, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 in a Florence hospital after an illness.
A graveside service was Tuesday in Florence Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Lake City Pentecostal Holiness Church, 608 S. Ron McNair Blvd., Lake City, 29560.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Frankie Norton Richardson; brother, Carl Norton and two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Kelly Lee and James W. Odom.
Born in Florence County, Mr. Norton was a son of the late Charles Frank and Essie Lee Norton. He had been in the construction business.
Surviving are his brother and sisters, Jackie (Cletus) Pierce of Lake City, Jessie Odom of Columbia, Betty Lee of Texas, Elizabeth (Maxie) Turner of Florence and Fred (Patsy) Norton of Effingham.
Jeannie Shady “Ette” Horton
Jeannie S. Horton of Effingham, 61, wife of Jimmy Horton, died Aug. 6, 2008 in a Florence hospital.
A funeral was Friday, Aug. 8 in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Lake City Memorial Park.
She is predeceased by her parents, Wilson W. and Marie Miles Shady; a son, Richard Keith Brown; two brothers, Marvin and Willie Shady.
Born in Florence County, Mrs. Horton was a daughter late Wilson W. and Marie Miles Shady.
She was a homemaker and attended the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving are her husband, Jimmy Horton of Effingham; a daughter, Dawn (Jimmy) Bell of Darlington; a son, Jimmy (Sara) Brown of Florence; two brothers, Henry (Edith) Shady of Scranton and Charlton Shady, Sr. of Florence; four grandchildren, Matthew Bell of Timmonsville, Summer Page of Florence, Andrew and Gracie Brown of Effingham; two step-sons, Johnny Horton of McCall and Jimmy Horton Jr. of Clio; a step-daughter, Donna Adams of McCall and a step-granddaughter, Margaret Horton of McCall.
