BETTY JEAN BONDS
TIMMONSVILLE - Betty Jean Anderson Bonds, 79, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. at Sardis Baptist Church, Timmonsville, directed by Layton-Anderson Funeral Home of Florence.
Mrs. Bonds was born in the Sardis community of Timmonsville. She was the wife of the late Troy Anderson (Jack) Bonds and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Ham (Ardath White) Anderson. She was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and a graduate of Columbia College.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jan Steinhauer of Somerset, N.J., Ardie and John Arvidson of Hartville, Gretchen and Eric Gleason of Greenville; a sister and brother-in-law, Jo and Fred Hofmeister of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Bonds Bodiford of Barnwell and Janie Bonds of Cayce; and eight grandchildren, Lee Steinhauer and Mark Steinhauer of Somerset, N.J., Mandy (Lee) Murph of Hartsville; Matt (Heather) Arvidson of Florence and Elizabeth Gleason, Erica Gleason, Caroline Gleason and Jack Gleason, all of Greenville. She was predeceased by her son, Troy Alexander Bonds.
SALLIE JAMES
Funeral services for Sallie Coker O’Neal James, 88, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church. The Revs. Gary Allen Mathis, William H. Griggs, David Wilks and Steve Winburn officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church, 1636 E. Old Camden Rd., Hartsville, SC 29550 or to the hospice of one’s choice.
Mrs. James, widow of Elbert Coleman James, died Wednesday, Dec. 3. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. John Norman O’Neal and the late Sara Coker O’Neal. She was the oldest member of Piney Plains Free Will Baptist Church. She retired from Hartville Manufacturing and was always proud of her Coker heritage.
Surviving are her sons, Charles E. James, W. Coker James, Ronnie D. James, Ricky A. James, all of Hartsville; daughters and sons-in-law, Rosa Lee Fales of Hartsville, Frances and Archie Wilks of Hartsville, Helen and Harry Mathis of Dovesville, Betty Catherine “Bennie Lou” and Harvey Teal of Hartsville, Shirley D. Hodges of Hartsville, Teresa and James Shaw of Hartsville; 36 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; caregiver, Shirley King. She was preceded in death by her son, Carson James; daughter, Voncille James; brothers, Roland O’Neal, Joe O’Neal; sisters, Rosa Lee Griggs, Ruth Griggs; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home served the family.

SHELTON KELLEY
Funeral services for Shelton Curtis Kelley, 68, were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at the Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kevin Walters officiating. Burial followed in Westview Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Kelley died Friday, Dec. 5. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of Sadie Hawkins Kelley and the late John Curtis Kelley.
Surviving are his mother of Hartsville; sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Billy Best of Hartsville; brother, Newitt “Bucky” Levi Kelley of Hartsville; niece, Penny Pons of Murrells Inlet; nephews, Chris Best of Mt. Pleasant, Johnny Kelley of Florence.

GERTRUDE (TRUDY) B. BROWN
LAURENS - Gertrude (Trudy) Burrows Brown died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, Laurens.
Born on Oct. 27, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Stanyarne and Julia Richardson Burrows of Sumter County.
She was predeceased by her husband, Minter MacFarland Brown, and an infant son, four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her three daughters, Margaret (Jim) Young of Greenville, Judy (Wayne) Pigg of Hartsville and Jane (Mark) Riechmann of Jackson-ville, Fla. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren, Beth (Paul) Osowski, Anne (Sterling) Price, Jim (Vivian) Young, Julie (Ray) Schmidler, Miriam (Russ) Norwood, Rob (Tina) Riechmann and Tim Riechmann; nine great-grandchildren; as well as one sister, Sarah B. Dawson of Sumter.
Trudy was a 1934 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Shortly after graduation she moved to Laurens as a social worker. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer of the United Methodist Women for many years. Trudy was also a member of the Laurens Hospital Auxiliary and served numerous years as a Brownie Scout Leader. In the 1960s she served on the Board of Women Visitors at the University of South Carolina.
Graveside services were held on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at 11 a.m. at New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Bill Rogers with a memorial service following at 2 p.m. at Rasor Chapel, Martha Franks Retirement Center, conducted by the Rev. Bill Rogers and Dr. Russell Dean.
The family would like to thank the staff of Martha Franks and especially her caregiver Pat Pulley for their loving care.

DARLINGTON - Bill Peterson died on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, in a Darlington health care facility after an illness. The family will receive friends at 708 High Hill Road. Hines Funeral Home Inc. of Hartsville is in charge of all arrangements.
SUSAN KING TUTTLE
Funeral services for Susan King Tuttle, 72, who died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 10, in the Chapel of Norton Funeral Home. The Rev. J.B. Skipper will officiate. Burial will be in Gum Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Tuttle was born in Hartsville, a daughter of the late Joseph Keith and Dorothy McKenzie King. She was retired from Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center as a secretary after 25 years of service.
Surviving are daughters, Pamela McGee, Susan Nutter of Hartsville; sister, Becky Tarlton of Hartsville; brothers, Richard and Colon King of Hartsville; grandchildren, Julie Atkinson, Jeffrey Piotrowski, Cody and Jonah Nutter; great-grandchild, Jade Atkinson.

VEE OPAL
GAINEY TYNER
PORT ROYAL - Vee Opal Gainey Tyner, 73, widow of Francis Leslie Tyner, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 11:30 a.m. at Port Royal Baptist Church, with burial in Beaufort National Cemetery.
Mrs. Tyner was born on April 12, 1935, in Hartsville. She was the daughter of the late John Henry Gainey Jr. and Ada Lenora Odom Gainey. She was a member of Port Royal Baptist Church, worked with the
Beaufort County Health Department and was the owner and operator with her husband Francis of Discount Tire Shack in Port Royal for many years.
Surviving are one son, David Alan Tyner; two grandchildren, Patrick Alan Tyner and Russell William Tyner, all of Port Royal.
Anderson Funeral Home served the family.
ROSA RODGERS
LAMAR - Funeral services for Rosa Rodgers were held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.
Mrs. Rodgers, 86, died Friday, Dec. 5, at Southland Nursing Facility after an illness. Rosa Lee Belvin Rodgers was born in Darlington County on April 8, 1921. She was the loving daughter of the late George and Lillie Coe Belvin. She received her education in the public schools in the area and was a retired employee of the Lee County School System. She was also a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Gloria (Fred) Patterson and Celestine (Joseph) Rodgers Williams, both of Latta, and Rosa (David) Rodgers Pettigrew of Cambria Height, N.Y.; one son, Moses (Theresa) Rodgers Jr. of Summerville; two brothers-in-law, Napolean Rodgers of Hartsville and Jenkin Burris; four sisters-in-law, Fannie Lee Rodgers and Lillie Mae Rodgers, both of Hartsville, Frenzena Russell and Niaoma Belvin; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.
