WILLIAM NELSON GARDNER
CHESTERFIELD — William Nelson Gardner, 74, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Gardner was born Oct. 13, 1933, in Chesterfield, a son of the late Lawrence Nelson and Sarah Frances Hunter Gardner. He was a retired industrial pipe fitter. He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed flea markets and auctions. William was preceded in death by a son, Brian Gardner, a brother, Coyt Gardner, and two sisters, Lillian Rayfield and Jean Davis.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Clanton Gardner of the home; six sons, Nelson (Kathy) Gardner of Seneca, the Rev. Jeff (Teresa) Gardner of Hartsville, Jerry Gardner of Walhalla, Scott (Allison) Gardner of Chesterfield, Chris (Liberti) Gardner of Ruby and David Hair of Ruby; one daughter, Sharon (Mike) Kimrey of Cheraw; one brother, Frankie (Donna) Gardner of Hartsville; one sister, Alice (Wes) Spindler of Charlotte, N.C.; brother-in-law, Dicky Davis of Chesterfield; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ELIZABETH DAWSON
Funeral services for Elizabeth Dawson will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Harold L and Dorothy J. Young Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville.

Mrs. Dawson, 82, died Friday, May 16, at her residence after an illness.

Mrs. Dawson was born in Latrobe, Pa., a daughter of the late Lovis and Minerva Coleman Crawley. She received her education in the public schools in the area.
Surviving are her son, Lwaisa Dawson; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Dawson; four grandchildren, Christopher, DeOnna, Erica and Jymal; two great-grandchildren, Amonei and Jahmir; a host of nieces, nephews and other close relatives and friends.

CHARLES EDWARD ZIMMERMAN
Funeral services for Charles Edward Zimmerman will be held at 3 p.m. today, May 23, 2008, at New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Young & Young Funeral Home.

Mr. Zimmerman, 55, died Sunday, May 18, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Preston and Flora Lee Smith Zimmerman. He received his education in the Darlington County public school system and graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1971. He was employed with Dixie Cup for 13 years. He was also a member of New Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ruth McPhail Zimmerman of Society Hill; two daughters, Delores Zimmerman of Society Hill and Tiffany (Bernard) Buckner of Florence; one son, Charles Zimmerman Jr. of Darlington; an adopted daughter, Beverly (Joseph) Wesley of Charleston; a godson, James Dowdy Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Patricia (Andrew) Fox of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Shirley (Charles) Jackson and Evelyn Jackson of Society Hill; six brothers, Preston (Maudie) Zimmerman Jr. of Society Hill, William (Mae Dean) Zimmerman of Darlington, Donald Zimmerman of North Carolina, Curtiss Zimmerman of Florence, Bernard (Lillie) Zimmerman of Bethune and Gilbert (Alberta) Zimmerman of Hartsville; a father-in-law, Frank McPhail Sr. of Darlington; three uncles, Edward (Ernestine) Zimmerman and Samuel (Harriet) Lee, both of Society Hill, and David Zimmerman of California; three aunts, Annie Mae Antrum and Ida Zimmerman, both of Society Hill, and Wilhelmina Smith of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; a special cousin, Willie Ervin (Elizabeth) Smith of Hartsville; a close friend, Felecia McPhail of Society Hill; 10 grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephew and other close relatives and friends.

EDWIN LEE ‘BUDDY’ GIBSON
KERSHAW — Funeral services for Edwin Lee “ Buddy “ Gibson, 71, will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 23, 2008, in Flat Creek Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Honors will be performed by S.C. Highway Patrol Honor Guard. The Revs. Bart Miles and Marvin Faile will officiate.

Born in Hartsville, Mr. Gibson died Tuesday, May 20, at his home. He was the son of the late Edwin Lee Jr. and Mary Ellen Brand Gibson. Mr. Gibson served his country with 32 years of military service and also retired as a S.C. State Trooper with 21 years of service. He also served in Desert Storm. He was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church, Marine Corps League Det. # 1169, Military Order of the Devil Dogs, American Legion Post # 31, S.C. State Trooper Association, American Association of State Troopers, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge # 15, past member of Masonic Lodge # 18 of Chester and a member of
the Lancaster County Leathernecks. Mr. Gibson was honored to be an usher at Arlington National Cemetery for the service of the tomb of the unknown soldier for World War II and Korean War soldiers, May 30, 1958.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Ann Faile Gibson of the home; his children; Edwin Scott Gibson and his wife Pam of Garden City Beach, Robin Euree Harris of Kershaw, Kenneth Martin Gibson of Kershaw and Timothy Grant Gibson and his wife Pam of Germany; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Helen Joyner; and a brother J.D. Gibson, both of Hartsville.

LORI ANN P. RAY
DARLINGTON — Lori Ann Padgett Ray, 46, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at her residence. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
 
Born in Darlington, she was a daughter of Carol Taylor Padgett and the late James “J.O.” Padgett. She graduated from St. John’s High School and then Chris Logan Style Setter’s. Lori operated C.P.S. Antiques and was very knowledgeable in restoring jewelry and antiques. She also loved horses and enjoyed horseback riding. Mrs. Ray was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving in addition to her mother of Darlington, are a brother, Joey (Angela) Padgett of Darlington and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Susan P. Blackman and Deborah P. Lynch.
