Women’s Health and Fitness Day, set for Wednesday, Sept. 24, is the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for women of all ages. Always on the last Wednesday in September, this unique national program spotlights the importance of regular physical activity and health awareness for all women.
On this day, hundreds of local organizations nation-wide will host women’s health and fitness events at hospitals, health clubs, schools, retirement communities and senior centers as well as other community locations. An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 women are expected to participate in these activities.
Sponsored by the Health Information Resource Center, the goal of this event is to encourage women to take control of their health. It enables them to learn the facts they need to make smart health choices and to make time for regular physical activity. Physical activity and fitness are important for women because the risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke can be reduced with regular physical activity of at least thirty minutes per day. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women and one in two women suffers from heart disease or stroke.
Regular preventive screenings for certain diseases can greatly improve a woman’s quality of life and life expectancy. To consult with your healthcare representative about what screenings are appropriate and at what age, contact the Marion Regional Healthcare System.
