Katherine Nelson Whelan and Frederick Millen were married Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, in a private ceremony on a beach in Maui, Hawaii.
Kate is the daughter of Bruce and Martha Nelson of Eagle River, Alaska. She graduated from Chugiak High School and Wayland Baptist University with a Bachelors of Science in human resource management. The bride is a human resource generalist for Alaska Village Electric Cooperative in Anchorage, Alaska.
Frederick is the son of Fred S. and Joann Millen of Darlington and the late Dorothy L. Millen. Fred S. Millen Sr. is a retired engineer from Sonoco. Frederick graduated from James F. Byrnes Academy High School and Columbia International University in Columbia. He is the human resource manager for USKH, Inc., an engineering and architectural firm in Anchorage, Alaska.
“It was the atypical realist vs. idealist, perfect will be just fine, classic yet impossible love story that brought us together. Just one step in the other direction and we may never have met our perfect match, and while it seems we have always been together, it was not that long ago we were thousands of miles apart,“ the couple wrote. Frederick proposed to Kate in South Carolina, during one of their many weekend trips across country to see one another.
The couple enjoyed a honeymoon filled with hiking, kayaking and snorkeling during their stay on Maui. Upon return to Alaska, family and friends celebrated their union at one of the couple’s favorite Tapas restaurants. Frederick’s family, mostly from Hartsville and Darlington, were unable to attend and were missed at the celebration.
The couple lives in Eagle River and looks forward to future adventures.
