The Woods Family is a classical music group composed of Francis Marion University Distinguished Professor of Music Dr. Benjamin Woods, violinist and composer Sherry Woods and their children, professional musicians Adrienne Woods and Christopher Woods.
Sherry, who leads a group of young musicians named Fleur de Lis, said interest was first generated during the earthquakes in China, when a member of the music group used a Fleur de Lis to help raise money for American Red Cross efforts for earthquake victims in China. After raising money for the American Red Cross at a Fleur de Lis concert of Christmas carols, Sherry said American Red Cross Pee Dee Chapter Executive Director Linda Boone-Smith asked her about a benefit at Florence Little Theatre with Fleur de Lis.
“It started out small and has just gotten bigger and bigger,” Sherry said.
The event will compile the eclectic interests of all members of the Woods family.
Benjamin, who soon will retire from FMU, will perform a piece by French composer Maurice Ravel.
“I’m writing a piece,” Sherry Woods said. “A lot of the program is based on the elements: earth, water, fire and air. The piece I’m writing is on fire.
“Adrienne’s been doing pop songs; Chris has been doing socially conscious rap songs. Chris is actually bringing his girlfriend, and she is a soprano and will sing on some songs. His performance will feature pre-programmed beats alongside live instrumentation.”
The range of the event, she said, is extensive.
“It won’t be your normal concert. Light, sound, rap, classical. It should be interesting,” she said. “The biggest thing is to raise money and bring awareness to the American Red Cross and their service to the com-munity.”
