The race for the 7thCongressional District is starting to gear up with candidate forums and debates, but the fundraising fight to become the newest South Carolina representative is also underway.
Congressional candidate Jay Jordan’s campaign announced Friday the Republican will soon file over $200,000 worth of campaign funds with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) raised during the fourth quarter of 2011.
A release issued Friday afternoon said the Florence attorney raised $206,000 from 244 donors since entering the race on Nov. 1.
The release said 96 percent of those donors came from within the newly created 7th Congressional District, which consists of a majority of the Pee Dee and Grand Strand regions.
The filing deadline for the fourth quarter of 2011 is Jan. 31, according to the FEC website.
Jordan’s fundraising puts him neck-and-neck with Horry County Council Chairman Tom Rice, whose fourth quarter filings of $206,700 make him the top fundraiser among all 7thcandidates currently filed with the FEC regardless of party.
Preston Brittian, a Democrat, is file the third largest campaign funds with $84,075 worth of contributions.
James Mader, a Republican, raised a $1,099 according to his filing report.
Rep. Thad Viers, who withdrew from the race following his arrest and subsequent harassment charges, was the only candidate to file in the third quarter of 2011. Viers reported $113,996 worth of donations from July 1 to Sept. 30, 2011.
Deborah Harwell, a Republican who dropped out in January due her husband’s ailing health, was listed as raising $9.750 during the fourth quarter.
All other candidates' filings were not yet posted on the FEC website as of Friday evening.
