FLORENCE -- The fifth suspect was captured Friday morning in connection with the New Year’s Day shooting that claimed the life of community activist Michael Hawkins.

Hawkins was shot to death Jan. 1 after three people entered the back door of his home at 909 Harmony St. about 8:20 p.m. on Jan. 1 and held he and his daughter at gunpoint.

Hawkins was shot twice and died from his injuries. His 18-year-old daughter was uninjured.

Lakavis Harrison, 25, was captured by U.S. Marshals, Florence Police, and the Florence County Sheriff’s Office in Coward.  Harrison is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery, burglary, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The warrants were issued shortly after the incident took place on New Year’s Eve where Harrison is alleged to have burglarized, robbed, and killed a man on Harmony Street in Florence.

Operation Intercept, the U.S. Marshal led fugitive task force in South Carolina, working alongside the Florence Police and Florence Sheriff’s Office, received information that Harrison was staying in a trailer in the 4100 block of Azalea in Coward. Authorities approached the residence and Harrison was ultimately taken into custody without incident.

Also taken into custody was Julia Harrison, the mother of Lakavis Harrison, for an outstanding probation violation warrant; there may be other pending charges against Ms. Harrison in the future.

Hawkins’ next-door neighbor, 19-year-old Jacquell McCullum of 911 W. Harmony St., along with 17-year-old Jacob White of 712 Habitat Lane and a 15-year-old juvenile were arrested Jan. 7.

A 16-year-old juvenile was taken into custody Jan. 10 on charges of murder, armed robbery, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, first-degree burglary and conspiracy. His name is not being released because he is a minor, Florence Police Chief Anson Shells said.

Kelvin Washington, the U.S. Marshal for South Carolina, stated: “Mr. Harrison has been brought to justice.  He will be held accountable for the accusations against him.  I would like to thank the Florence Police Department and Florence County Sheriff’s Office for all their hard work and dedication to capturing Mr. Harrison.”
