Marion County officials are organizing plans to get more people involved and aware of the need for an interstate project that has been proposed for several years.
With help from the Mullins and Marion Chamber of Commerce, officials plan to hold an I-73 Rally in Mullins on Jan. 27 at the Milton Troy Sr. Hall on Gapway Street.
“We’ve made trips to Washington D.C. as a group that represents I-73 along with Horry and Marlboro counties and what we did up there is decide that we need to have community meetings in our perspective areas,” Marion County Economic Development Director Rodney Berry said.
Berry said the gathering will feature the legislative delegation, information and question and answer session along with a dinner. Seating will be limited.
“The whole purpose is to rally for I-73,” he said of the interstate that is expected to provide an economic boost on a highway that stretches from Michigan to Myrtle Beach.
The county initiative is called a game-changer by the group.
County Administrator Tim Harper said the potential growth and opportunities are important. “It’s important to our citizens to be familiar and know the facts of I-73,” Harper said. A progress report will also be given, Harper said.
“Anytime you have industries looking at a county, one of the first things they ask is if you have an interstate,” Harper said.
Marion Councilman Milton Troy II said it’s important for the local community to be involved in the process because it will take more convincing on the federal level in regards to funding the project.
“Success hinges a lot on that interstate infrastructure,” Berry said.
The I-73 Rally is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
