With the New Year, there’s now a new way to exercise in the area, as Zumba, a Latin dance fitness program, has made its way to Johnsonville and Hemingway.
The program is coupled with dance music and designed to create a curriculum of exercises that keeps its users entertained and far away from the doldrums of regular workouts.
Yuvonne Carter, a Zumba instructor, brought the rhythms and moves of the exercise program to a Zumba expo at the dance studios of Cheri and Company on Saturday, Jan. 21 as a way to help introduce the community to Zumba.
Carter says the intensity of the workout belies those who participate in it by always providing a fresh take on getting physically fit.
“At the end of the workout, a lot of people say, “Oh, wow! It’s already been an hour?” Carter said. “They have fun doing it… I find that the majority of the people that take the class, they get addicted to it.”
Saturday’s event certainly provided the foothold Carter was looking for as more than 100 people showed up to participate in the free event.
While calling Johnsonville her hometown, Carter knows that sometimes, there are few outlets for personal well-being in a small town, but hopes that by coupling with Fitness World of Hemingway, she can help bring more variety.
“There’s a lot of people that don’t know about it,” she said. “The whole point of getting it out there and letting people try it for free is to let them see if it’s for them or not...”
As time-consuming as one’s daily routine may be, the hour-long Zumba classes are something Carter feels can be worked into the day-to-day hassle that is the work week.
Although the class isn’t exclusively for women – men are welcomed to join as well – Carter said the women that predominately make up her classes enjoy the class as a way to get away from the responsibly that can sometimes seem overwhelming.
“A lot of women are mothers and they don’t have time for a lot of other stuff, other than home, work and kids,” she said. “This is a great way to get in an hour of activity every week or twice a week. It’s a great way to get away from the stress.”
The hour-long workouts are not obligated by a contract and are $5 a class. If you would like to participate in a Zumba class, simply show up to one of the classes.
The classes in Hemingway are at Fitness World of Hemingway and begin at 7:30 p.m. Mondays, while Wednesday and Thursday classes are at 5:30.
The classes in Johnsonville are at the dance studios of Cheri and Company, with Monday classes starting at 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday classes start at 7:30.
