A Jefferies Creek Boulevard home burned to the ground despite the efforts of two Florence County fire departments to prevent it.
The fire was reported when the teen at home initially thought he heard someone breaking into the home only to find that half the double-wide residence was on fire, a family member said.
The home was 75 percent involved in fire when the first firefighters arrived, Howe Springs Fire Chief Shannon Smith said.
Hannah-Salem-Friendfield firefighters responded with mutual aid as Howe Springs firefighters, already tied up on one house fire, rolled to the rural Pamplico fire.
The two departments shuttled water from a hydrant two-plus miles distant but could do little more than prevent the fire from spreading into the surrounding trees.
No residents were injured in the fire. As of 4 p.m. firefighting efforts continued.
Florence County Emergency Medical Services and the Florence County Sheriff's Office also responded to the fire.
