Darlington County Sheriff’s Office has received calls of a possible scam going on in Darlington County.
The scam works like this: A person calls a local business and asks to talk to the manager. When the manager picks up, the person says “I am with the county sheriff’s office (no name of county, just sheriff’s office). The scammer will say that there is an employee locked up in there jail, charged with DUI, and needs $2491.00 to get out of jail. The scammer will also tell the manager that the person was slightly injured in a motor vehicle accident and that they cannot release their name because of the Hippa law, “but if you tell me their name I will tell you if you are right”. When the manager says a name (of a person who is not at work that day) the scammer says that is the person.
“I have had a few businesses call me about this, and at this time there are no reports of anyone paying any money to this person. This office would never call anyone asking for money to get someone out of jail, it’s not our policy to do that” Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd said.
If anyone calls with this scam, contact local law enforcement immediately.
