The long-abandoned Circuit City store on David McLeod Boulevard is about to get a touch of class.
Or, classes.
Work is under way at the site on the corner of McLeod and Woody Jones Boulevard to convert the store into the fifth Virginia College campus in South Carolina. The school already operates in Spartanburg, Greenville, Columbia and Charleston, and has plans to open a Myrtle Beach campus as well.
Virginia Colleges are one of several franchises operated by Birmingham, Alabama-based Educational Corporation of America. VC offers associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a variety of field. ECA Vice President Don Keith declined to provide details of what tracks or majors VC-Florence and also wouldn’t directly confirm that the company was planning to locate in Florence.
“We are considering a location in Florence, subject to regulatory appeal,” said Keith.
Keith said the company was prohibited from announcing new locations until state and federal accreditation and licensing processes were complete.
ECA’s four existing Virginia College’s focus on medical and related fields. Degrees offered at the four campuses include cosmetology, medical assistant, medical billing and coding, pharmacy tech, surgical tech, and an associate’s degree in business administration, among others. The college advertises its flexible schedules and the speed with which students can obtain a degree. The company’s website reports that, “Our associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs emphasize a fast and focused method without sacrificing the quality education that students and employers demand. We constantly research the job market to make certain we are offering those career programs in which the greatest job growth is expected.
