Six area high schools competed in the 14th annual Williamsburg Technical College (WTC) math contest on Feb. 10. Among those participating were C.E. Murray High School, Carvers Bay High School, Hemingway High School, Kingstree Senior High School, Johnsonville High School and Williamsburg Academy.
Overall individual first place winner was Williamsburg Academy student Joy Carsten. Additional individual winners included: second place to Johnsonville High School student Alyssa Hinson; third place to Williamsburg Academy student Ken McGill; fourth place to Williamsburg Academy student Stacey Tomlinson, and fifth place to Johnsonville High School student Jordan Carmichael.
Top scorers from each school included Williamsburg Academy’s Joy Carsten, Johnsonville High School’s Alyssa Hinson, Kingstree Senior High School’s Frankin Martin, Hemingway High School’s Luis Marin, C.E. Murray High School’s Carlos Cunningham, and Carvers Bay High School’s Antonio Lee. Johnsonville High School’s team accompanied by advisor by Melanie Graham won first place in the team competition. Competing were students Lukas Daniel, Jordan Carmichael, Lindsay Smith, Courtney Squires, and Alyssa Hinson.
The second place team advised by Chuck Montgomery included Williamsburg Academy students William Cooper, Stacey Tomlinson, Linda Ann McKenzie, Ken McGill, and Joy Carsten. Third place team winners from Carver’s Bay High School advised by Judi Robinson & Will Tanner included Antonio Lee, Martin Brown, Dana Gibson, Teondre Bromell, and Martinais Hudson. Fourth place went to the C.E. Murray High School team advised by Danny Bryant which included students Carlos Cunningham, Trevor Patterson, Jemeer Tisdale, Justin McBride, and Trenard Harvin.
Fifth place went to Hemingway High School’s team members Armien Harrell, Luis Marin, Alexis Burgess, Tieasha Brayboy, and LaQuanna Thomas who were advised by Betty Jean Sellers. Sixth place was awarded to Kingstree Senior High School’s team, advised by Janice Brown & Betty Scott, which included Amari Battiste, Surya Boyd, Daidriell McCray, Franklin Martin, and Marquece Burrao.
The top team individual winners received trophies, while the top five overall scorers won trophies and graphing calculators. The three top teams won trophies and medallions and the winning team will have their school name engraved on the coveted “Ein-stein” trophy which features team names of all past WTC math contest winners.
