The chief scout executive of the Boy Scouts of America will be at the Florence Civic Center for a luncheon Feb. 24.
Robert “Bob” Mazzuca will be the first chief scout executive to visit the Pee Dee. He also will be in Myrtle Beach on Feb. 23 at the campus of Horry-Georgetown Technical College.
Both events are by invitation only.
Mazzuca will discuss where scouting is coming from and its vision for the future.
Barry McDonald is the Pee Dee Area Council Scout executive. He called Mazzuca and asked him to come to the Pee Dee.
“Bob is very open and a people-oriented person,” McDonald said. “He is one of the most personable, accessible and responsible scout executives I’ve ever worked for.”
There are more than 4,000 Scouts and Cub Scouts in the Pee Dee Area Council, which serves 11 counties. Mazzuca’s appearance will also signal the kickoff of a $500,000 fundraising campaign for the Pee Dee Area Council.
McDonald said the Pee Dee Area Council has:
-- Had three straight years of membership growth.
-- Increased attendance at Camp Coker.
-- 53 new Eagle scouts.
-- Increased volunteer recruitment and parental involvement.
-- An exciting year ahead as the council embarks on its Strategic Plan under the leadership Walt Barefoot, a local attorney.
-- Plans to increase Cub and Boy Scout camping as well as recruiting more youth and volunteers.
Meanwhile, Mazzuca’s goal is to lead the Boy Scouts of America as it builds the character and integrity of America’s youth.
As the chief executive and in partnership with national officers and board, Mazzuca provides vision and direction to staff members and volunteers. This includes about 1,100 National Council employees, 5,800 local council employees and almost 1.2 million adult volunteers who serve more than 3.7 million youth across the nation.
