Mullins High School students from the past and present were honored Saturday as the Friends and Alumni Association of Palmetto High School celebrated its annual Black Achievement Awards Banquet at Mullins High School.
Established in 1984, the alumni association organized by graduates of Palmetto High School, including founder of the organization Marion County Councilman Milton Troy II, put together several activities during the course of the year, raising money for college scholarships. Graduates from Palmetto High School also gather at Smith Haven Park in Mullins for a July 4th celebration with family and friends along with a fundraiser.
As many as 15 student scholars and athletes were awarded scholarships ranging from $500 to $800. The gesture is a tribute from alumni that attended high school during segregation.
“If they’re going to pursue a degree in health science or going to be a teacher they get a four-year scholarship,” Troy said. He also told the crowd that they might not have had the same opportunities but they’re pushing the students on.
The Association honored past Palmetto Alumni Scholarship recipients that graduated with a degree in the area of health science.
Palmetto Pioneer awards were presented to nuclear medicine technologist Jameek Fryson, physician assistant Anthony Robinson, license practical nurse Michayla Rowell, registered nurse Alexis Utley, pharmacist Latoya Leonard, registered nurse Crystal Neal, speech pathologist Micca Whaley, occupational therapist Angel Bryant, registered nurse Latoya Munson, massage therapist Jessica Wheeler, nutritionist Kimberly Williams, criminalist Tasha Johnson, surgical physicians assistant Rashard Hunter and sleep technologist Rodney Cochran and Jessica Pressley.
Several the pioneers had words of advice to the group of students earning recognition.
“The people in this community helped me get where I am today, just as they’re helping you get where you are,” Fryson said. “In order for you to move forward and continue to reach these goals you have to continue to impact your community.”
The master of ceremony for the dinner and awards ceremony was Mullins High School junior LaVern Page.
Receiving scholarship awards for this year are Palmetto Scholars Tyrell Grice and Emily Hokett.
