Fire destroys 100-year-old Lamar building

A fire that engulfed Lamar Hardware and Lumber early Wednesday morning has left the more than 100-year-old building in ruins.

Lamar Police Chief Charles Woodle said the fire began just after midnight and quickly enveloped the building. Flames shooting through the roof and smoke billowing into the air could be seen for miles, said Desi Conrad of Lamar who witnessed the fire. The century-old landmark was built in the late 1800s as an old train depot.

Woodle said no one was injured in the fire and no firefighters were injured while battling the flames. Three nearby homes were considered for evacuation, particularly one with a bedridden resident, but the fire was under control before a decision to call for evacuations was necessary.

Personnel from Darlington County fire stations 2, 3, 9, and 14 responded to the fire. Also assisting were firefighters from the Darlington, Hartsville, Lee County, Timmonsville, Timmonsville/Sardis and West Florence fire departments.

Woodle said the investigation into the cause of the fire has been turned over to the State Law Enforcement Division.
