Progress Energy will launch the Dillon Country version of its Neighborhood Energy Saver program on Tuesday Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at J.V. Martin Junior High.

The Neighborhood Energy Saver program provides energy-efficient improvements in the homes of low-income families at no cost to the customer. The upgrades will help to reduce customer energy use and household energy costs. The program is available to qualifying residents in Dillon County

Progress Energy officials, including Melody Birmingham Byrd, vice president for Progress Energy Carolinas, will join Todd Davis, the mayor of Dillon, Dillon County Council Chair Archie Scott and other local officials at the event.

The goal of the program is to install a comprehensive package of energy conservation upgrades at no cost to the customer. Progress Energy selects neighborhoods to participate in the program based on a variety of criteria, including the percentage of homes that meet low-income guidelines and concentration of homes in the area.

The company expects to install upgrades in approximately 1,500 homes. To date, the Neighborhood Energy Saver program has provided nearly 9,000 low-income families in the Carolinas with energy-efficient home improvements.

Prior to installing measures, an energy advisor will conduct an assessment at each residence to identify the appropriate upgrades to install. Measures include installing compact fluorescent light bulbs and programmable thermostats, changing air filters, caulking doors and windows, insulating water heaters, and other upgrades that can help homeowners save up to $95 a year on their electric bills. In addition to the installation of the upgrades, residents will learn energy-efficiency techniques to help them reduce energy use and manage their electric bill.
