An 81-year-old Darlington woman died after the vehicle in which she was riding crashed into the Darlington Raceway Stock Car Museum on Thursday afternoon.

Darlington County Coronor Todd Hardee identified the woman as Evelyn Siple of Darlington.

The accident happened at 3:20 p.m. when 47-year-old Daniel Siple was driving south in a 2000 Chevrolet four-door vehicle and tried to cross S.C. 34/151, but struck the building, S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Bryan McDougald said.

Daniel Siple, who had been wearing a seat belt, was injured and taken by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment, McDougald said.

No one inside the museum was injured, but the crash left a hole in the wall, according to a woman who answered the telephone there soon after the crash. The name of the museum, formerly the Joe Weatherly Stock Car Museum, was changed following a major renovation and expansion project in 2003.

Raceway spokesman Jake Harris said the museum was closed Friday to assess the damage and repair the building, but is expected to reopen Saturday for its normal 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours. He said none of the exhibits were damaged.

The highway patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash, McDougald said.
