When the sun came up Saturday morning over Darlington Raceway, there was very little evidence on the red-and white-striped walls around the 1.33-mile egg-shaped oval that there had been a 200-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series race there the previous night--not to mention a busy day of qualifying and rain-shortened practice.
Track officials made a commitment a few years ago to re-paint the walls of the track between the two races each Mother's Day weekend, not only so it will look better when the national television crews and the 60,000-plus fans in the grandstands turn their attention to the Southern 500 Saturday night, but it will also help show just how many new "Darlington stripes" are put up on the wall by the 43-car Sprint Cup Series field.
Under the supervision of Darlington Raceway Superintendent Lee Taylor, crews spent the better part of six hours, from right after the track was cleaned following Kyle Busch's Royal Purple 200 win, painting over the stripes that dirtied the red and white stripes the track paints all the way around.
According to the track, it took over 100 gallons of paint to cover the scuffs, bumps, and nasty black and brown stripes left from Friday's action.
