Dr. Allie Brooks Jr., Interim Superintendent for Florence School District 1, was honored as the winner of the 2010 Ashby P. Lawrimore Award for service, given by the United Way of Florence for outstanding community service.
The award was given at the United Way’s annual meeting, in conjunction with the Florence Rotary Club, at the Florence Civic Center.
Brooks, a Florence native, was cited for his ongoing service both with the school system and through the various local boards and agencies with which he is affiliated.
Brooks said told
“I accept it humbly,” Brooks told the audience. “Not everyone gets an honor, but everyone can be great because everyone can serve.”
The Lawrimore Award is named for former BB&T officer and long-time community volunteer Ashby P. Lawrimore.
Also at Monday’s event, Clay Williams of Florence-Darlington Technical College was honored with the 2010 Campaign Volunteer Service Award; and Lynne Davis of Carolinas Hospital received the Campaign Spirit Award.
PGBA of Florence was recognized as the top corporate giver. Company donations topped $149,000. Roche Carolina received the Leadership Excellence Award for having the most employees who donated more than $500 to the 2010 campaign. Forty Roche employees donated $500 or more, for a total of $30,844.
The corporate Rising Star Award, giving to companies that show promise of being future United Way campaign stars, went to Angus Palm, which raised $3,240 in the company’s first-ever campaign.
Circle Park Behavioral Health received the Partner Agency Award, for the best campaign among agencies that are United Way donation recipients.
