COLUMBIA - Nine South Carolina colleges and universities are now posting itemized spending details online, giving taxpayers access to information about how their money is spent.
According to a news release from the Comptroller General's office, the schools include Francis Marion University, Horry Georgetown Technical College, Lander University, The Citadel, Spartanburg Community College, Clemson University, Trident Technical College, TriCounty Technical College, and Piedmont Technical College.
“These colleges and universities are to be commended for giving parents and taxpayers online access to details about how their hard-earned dollars are being spent," Comptroller Richard Eckstrom said in the release. “Spending transparency is the key to quality government. When spending is done in the open, those in charge of government purse-strings are more accountable."
The nine colleges have begun posting their expenditures on their Web sites under a transparency pilot program created Eckstrom and state Senators Mike Rose of dorchester County and Hugh Leatherman of Florence County.
Rose and Leatherman are also sponsors of pending legislation requiring all state-supported colleges and universities to post spending details online monthly, the release said.
The colleges’ and universities’ transparency pages are linked to the Comptroller’s Web site at www.cg.sc.gov.
