The Florence School District 3 Board of Trustees has selected Dr. Keith Callicutt  to serve as the district’s interim superintendent.

Callicutt, a retired Florence School District 5 superintendent who lives in Johnsonville, was selected Monday night during a special board meeting.

From 2005 to 2010, Callicutt served as superintendent of Fort Mill School District in York School District 4. He also served from 2001 to 2005 as superintendent of Newberry County School District.

He was superintendent of Florence 5 from 1994 to 2001, according to his resume.

Callicutt was principal of Dutch Fork High School in School District 5 of Lexington and Richland Counties from 1991 until 1994.  He was principal of Irmo High School, in that same district, from 1986 until 1991.

Additionally, he was director of secondary education for Lancaster Area Schools from 1985 to 1986.

Callicutt earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Clemson University in 1973 and master’s degree in elementary education from Francis Marion University in 1979.  He earned an educational specialist degree in educational administration from Winthrop University in 1987. Callicutt earned his Ph.D in educational administration from the University of South Carolina in 1999, according to his resume.

He began his career in education as a teacher and athletic director at The Carolina Academy in Lake City in 1972.

Other candidates for the interim superintendent position were Dr. Frank Baker, superintendent of Sumter School District 2; Melvin Smoak, retired Orangeburg 5 superintendent; and Dr. Lane N. Floyd, retired Florence 3 superintendent.

District counsel Andrea White, an attorney with Duff, White & Turner LLC, said the district received 11 applications from people interested in the interim superintendent position.

White said interim superintendents normally serve a one-year term, with the agreement that the individual’s contract can be broken with 30 days’ notice if a permanent superintendent is found sooner by the school board.
