Hartsville man pleads guilty to mortgage fraud

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A Hartsville man has pleaded guilty to charges related to mortgage fraud, according to a press release from the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs.

Larry K. Shackelford was convicted of obtaining signature or property under false pretenses, a charge that stems from a collaborative effort between the Florence Police Department and SCDCA.

An investigation uncovered Shackelford’s attempt to deceive a lender into believing he was authorized to conduct business with South Carolina consumers, according to the release. He sent the lender a letter that appeared to be issued by the state Consumer Affairs Department by creating a “SCDCA” letterhead and forging an employee’s signature under a statement indicating he could originate mortgage loans.

SCDCA is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the licensing of mortgage brokers and loan originators. Consumers can visit www.NMLSConsumerAccess.org or call 800-922-1594 to find out if a mortgage broker or loan originator is licensed.
