Blockage in Florence sewer main discharges 20,000 gallons of wastewater

»  Comments | Post a Comment

About 11 a.m. Tuesday an estimated 20,000 gallons of wastewater were discharged from manhole near 1153 Day St. by the CSX railroad stockyard in Florence and flowed into Pye Branch.

The City of Florence was notified of a potential wastewater spill and the Utility Department’s collection operations crew investigated the report and found a blockage, composed mainly of grease, in the sewer main. The crew rodded the line, restoring normal flow, and the spill stopped at about 2:30 p.m.

On Wednesday morning, a utility crew will return to the site to clean and disinfect the affected area, and make structural repairs to the manhole. The cleanup and repairs were completed by noon Tuesday. The City also took water samples in Pye Branch. These samples are being analyzed to document that there was no threat to public health or the environment.

In July 2008, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control required wastewater collection system operators, including the City of Florence, to enact public notification programs related to sanitary sewer overflows.  In response to this new regulatory requirement, the city developed a policy for releasing information on overflows of 5,000 gallons or more.
