One of 13 turbine units at the Progress Energy's Darlington County plant was damaged by fire following an equipment malfunction Saturday afternoon.
The No. 12 unit at the plant is currently off line after the malfunction and subsequent insulation fire, Scott Suggs, Progress Energy spokesman, said.
No other units at the plant were damaged, Suggs said.
No injuries were reported in the malfunction, the fire or the response, Suggs said.
Suggs said he didn't know the extent of the damage or a dollar figure.
Progress Energy has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, he said.
Darlington County Fire Department firefighters were originally dispatched about 2:20 p.m. and were joined for mutual aid by Hartsville firefighters.
The plant is one of many Progress Energy combustion turbine facilities throughout the Carolinas.
The facility has 13-units and is capable of producing 799-MW, according to the Progress-Energy Web site.
The turbines are essentially jet engine powered generators Progress Energy uses several hours a day to meet peak demand for electricity, Suggs said.
