Bill Connor narrowly captured an informal straw poll between candidates for the South Carolina Republican Party's state chairmanship Monday night, at a regular meeting of the Florence County Republican Party.
Connor, a reserve army officer and attorney from Orangeburg, captured 14 votes to 13 for Greenville attorney Stephen Brown and 11 for engineer Chad Connolly of Newberry. Connor lost to Pamplico's Ken Ard in a runoff for the GOP's nomination for lieutenant governor last fall.
The three men are running to succeed current chair Karen Floyd who announced last year that she is stepping down.
The straw poll followed a spirited, 95-minute forum featuring the three candidates.
